Xbox Live Update Loop
« on: October 23, 2006, 08:53:00 PM »

Okay, he's my situation. I softmodded my XBox (After an unsuccessful chip install) and it went off without a hitch. After a few weeks of using it I started to wonder what the button on the softmod installer that said "Restore MS Dash" would do. I hit and it copied some files and shut my XBox down, when it started my MS Dash popped up instead of EvoX and said "Updating MS Dash Please Wait....". I figured "I'm not connected to the internet so I'm safe". After about 5 seconds it went to an error screen saying "Xbox Live is not responding. Please try again later." This is when I hit Okay and it went back to trying to update again. It did the same thing and now I'm stuck in a loop and I can't boot games to start the installer. I tried formatting a new hard drive with xboxhdm but when I started the xbox I got error 05 (hard drive not locked) so I locked it and got error 06 (Unable to unlock hard drive). Since I don't have an eeprom backup (Stupid, stupid me) and hotswaps are unsuccessful with my Gateway bios, I guess I need an answer to one of three questions:

1. Is there a way to soft-flash my bios so my hard drive doesn't need to be locked?

2. Is there a way to force my way around the dash update so I can start Mechassault and load the linux exploit?

3. Since my hard drive had EvoX on it there's an eeprom backup on there, but since I don't have the backup I can't unlock my original hard drive to get it. I need a way to force open my xbox hard drive even if just for a few hours (As I plan to switch over to the newer one anyway) to get it.

My original xbox hard drive is a Western Digital.

I'm not sure if this is needed but the newer one is a 40 gig Hitachi Deskstar.

Any help will put me forever in your debt. Thank you in advance.

If you can't boot games, don't have your eeprom, and can't hotswap, I think it's time for a modchip. Pick up a Doux2 for cheap.

I was hoping it wouldn't come to that. But if I must, I must.
