Just wanted to ask if anyone knew about this war, or have indeed studied it in American history - I didn't know anything about it until recently.

All I remember learning in elementary school and middle school was the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Basically what Raptor said, British re-attacked, burned most of DC, almost capture the president, got defeated at Fort McHenry, (Star Spangled Banner was written), the respected general of the British forces was picked off by a kid in a tree with a squirrel hunting gun, British troops returned home. 1814 they returned and were massacred at the Battle of New Orleans by Old Hickory (Andrew Jackson), this would be where Andrew Jackson would gain the fame he needed to run for and be elected as president (one of the better presidents in my opinion).

Just been reading about the war in "Made in America" by Bill Bryson, did you know that the White House is painted white, because as Maximumbeing said, much of Washington DC was burned down and it was painted to hide the marks left by fire.

Also, the Battle of New Orleans was actually part of the 1812 war, only that communications between the east and west (as New Orleans was of course on the west frontier at the time) were so bad that Jackson didn't get news that the war had finished in time biggrin.gif

It was basically a war between the US and Canada. The US wanted to get at britain by attacking canada, but failed. Canada won basically because of some help form natives and the lack of unity between the americans.
