Copy Files Off Of Locked Xbox Hard Drive Via Usb?
« on: September 12, 2006, 01:18:00 PM »

Hi, is there any way for me to read an Xbox hard drive in Windows with it hooked up via USB?  I happen to have a locked Xbox hard drive (which I cna unlock via IDE in xboxhdm if needed) and no Xbox to put it in.  However, I do want the files on the hard drive.

If I were to unlock the drive over xboxhdm, then unplug it, put my Windows drive back in, and install this drive into a USB adapter, is there any way I could read it from Windows and copy the files?  If not, can it be read in Windows hooked up via IDE alongside my normal hard drive?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  And if anyone cares about the Mimesis project, the faster I get help with this problem, the faster you guys see two new Halo 2 maps.

Thanks.

As long as it stays unlocked, you likely can.

It would be best to unlock it and connect it to the secondary IDE.

Use Xplorer360 to browse the drive. You can drag and drop files into Windows Explorer.

Got a suggestion otehr than Xplorer360?  It keeps giving me an error about failing to create directory during recursive dump when I try to copy my gamees off it.

What I did was get the Xplorer360 window up and the Windows Explorer up so I could see both at the same time. Drag the file/folder you want from Xplorer360 to Windows Explorer. It may be easiest to drag them over and sort them out later.

Yeah that's what I've been doing.  Very few games will copy without the error...

Any chance I can boot Knoppix, mount my FATX F Drive, and mount my NTFS partition and copy the files?

Alright, I mounted my second NTFS partition (the one without SP2 because XP SP2 breaks Linux NTFS support) and then made a new folder in mnt (mkdir /mnt/F) and then attempted to mount the Xbox drive (mount -t fatx /dev/hda55 /mnt/F).  Unfortunately I got an error regarding FATX, so I'm gonna assume Knoppix does not support FATX.  ANyone got a LiveCD that does?

The Xbox HDM CD supports FatX. You can copy from the Xbox drive to a FAT32 or likely ext2 drive, or back, with the file commander on the Xbhdm CD.
