So there is hope of installing a drive larger than 500 gigs, have you seen or heard of someone installing a 750 gig?
What would be the limitation of the partion size?
Just look at my signature.

heh, theres alot of information flaoting around about this, problem is alot of it is wrong

the xbox default is 16k clusters, this causes data to corrupt at 256gb on a single partition, you cna format with 32k clusters to increase partition size to 512gb, theoretically you can use 64k clusters to go to 1024gb and 128k to put a full 2tb on a single partition

of course with each of these the minimum filesize is increases to the cluster size, resulting in more slack, by 64k and 128k it might not be worth it (although 64k would ne necessary if an IDE drive larger than 1tb is ever released)

So if I understand it right then I sould be able to partion f to 500@ 32k and g to the rest or vise versa, after c,e,xyz have been done.

When I worked for Seagate we always struggled with platter sizes and adding more to get more out of the same package size, now with perpendicular recording technology the same drives with the same amount of platters can store. "Since there are only so many bits that can be packed onto a finite space, linear hard disk recordings max out at 100 to 200 Gb/in². Perpendicular recording is expected to increase the amount of available storage space to up to 5-10 times that or around 1 Tb/in²." THG
Seagate 750 GB Barracuda Enters The Big League

Expect drives to start getting bigger and bigger and the price to drop.
I still would like to know if anyone has done this yet, anyone?

No.

If you choose to use an F+G BIOS, F will by default be used up 'till 137GB (the LBA32 border). Everything after that will be used on G, which would be still something like 600GB. What you need is a program which can format 64k clusters. However, such a program doesn't exist yet. Or it must be possible to format it under Linux...

Does xboxhdm support 64k clusters? Anyone?

I don't think many people have experimented with drives bigger than 400GB. It's also a bit overkill, in my opinion. Especially if you have a lot of small files. Expect a lot of space to be wasted by slack.

Hey, that was my idea! tongue.gif

Since the source for XBPartitioner is available, it could probably be modified without much difficulty.

I don't believe it supports 64 KB clusters, or even 32 KB clusters.

So, just curious really, as I like to know stuff that really isn't that important to me, but is this the final answer at the moment? No 750gb drives?

I've used xbpartitioner, and it does give you the option to split the drive space evenly across F+G, at least with the 200 to 250 gb drives I've used. It can't split the space of a 750gb drive evenly? If it could, and there are bioses that recognize this, it should work fine..

I have the seagate 500 in my 1.6b with the xenuim gold using m8plus.67 and I chose 124 for f and the rest for g 345 gigs.
The drive is really a 476 gig although it is sold as a 500.
So if I have G@ 345, it would seem that F could also be 375 or close as a 750 will be more like a 725.

When using only the Xbox BIOS, it is not possible to fully use a 750 GB hard drive, as I have said earlier. Formatting the drive with 64 KB clusters, though, would allow such a large drive to be used without corruption.

However, if the drive has a partition table stored on its first sector, this partitioning scheme will be used instead of the stock one. This table, which can be created with XBPartitioner, allows non-standard partition sizes to be used. This statement is similar to the information that 'Big Whoopin'' posted.

Actually, there is a BIOS like that, two of them so far as I know.  The current Team Xecuter X2 and X3 BIOSes both support reading the partition table off the drive instead of having it controlled in the BIOS itself. (I believe there is an option you need to take in X3CL to enable this tho.)  Use XB Partitioner to set up the F and G partitions as desired, format with 32k clusters if the partition is larger than the 16k cluster limit, reboot and allow the BIOS to read the partition table off the disk much like how it works on a PC.

There may be other BIOSes that have this same function, I'm not sure.  I've just been working with Xecuter chips and BIOSes my entire time modding (except for the brief M8 stint before Xecuter released a 1.6 compatible X2 BIOS) and more or less know those setups inside and out.

Regarding a question on where to select the cluster size in XBPart., I believe you first need to toggle the "action" to format instead of write partition table.  Been a month since I did this.  The 16k/32k marker does show up in the top right of the screen so if you are having a problem with overscan on your TV you may not be able to see it.

-Whoopin'

what bios number would you suggest be used and are there 1.6 versions?

The 'X2 Config Live 5035' BIOS would work fine for your Xbox. Its default partitioning setting is that the 'F' drive claims all free space.

From the downloaded archive, just make sure that you use the version for 1.6 consoles.
