Ipod 5g Vs Ipod Nano
« on: November 15, 2005, 04:50:00 PM »

I'm thinking of getting an iPod but i can't decide which one to get.  Both have its pros and cons.  What I'm most concerned about is its durability.  I hear the nano is a lot easier to scratch and I'm disappointed to hear that because thats the one i was leaning toward.  Can i get some of your opinons on these ipods.

The nano might scratch more easily, but it's only scratches.  Any device you use regularly will get dings, dents, and scratches.

If durability is your concern, then go with the nano.  Flash memory-based players will survive far longer than hard drive-based players with moving parts.

It also depends on how much space you'll need.  If you only need 2-4GB of space, then the nano is a good choice.

I have a 6gb iPod Mini w/ a Pac Rim Magnesium hard case.

Can't be beat.  Lightweight, scratch-resistant, solid battery life, 6gb capacity.  You won't be sorry.

honestly all ipod's suck

but thats just my opinion

my friend bought an ipod nano

first thing is its not worth the money

around $200 for 2 gigs
i know it changes the format of the song to fit more, but thats still really not alot of space

itunes sucks more than anything in the world, just for itunes i would never get an ipod

the color screen really isn't all that great, trying to put photos on there ended up deleting every single picture on my computer, that really pissed me off

the thing seemed to scratch more easily than anything else, my friends looked like it went through a tornado

then he dropped it one day and put this dent in the back that completely fucked it up

the battery life didn't last long at all, and the only way to charge it was through a computer, i thought that was gay

the whole thing just pissed me off

this is just my experince with one of these things

if your like a skateboarder or something then this thing is pretty small and shit and easy to skate with but other than that apple is an evil corporation  ph34r.gif

The 3rd Gen IMHO was the best thing to ever happen to Apple.
The Nano is by far the WORST.

Try and get a 40Gb Photo, even the U2 Version...that was sexy..
The 5th Gen is incredible, but a little over the top.

As for you people that say 'iTunes Sucks', the by far better alternative is EphPod, Completely Free. 100% better than iTunes..you can download news to your notes section and organise your calanders...Recover lost songs, and completely rebuild the iPod after a whipe...

Mind if I ask where you bought it and for how much?

Anyway, back to the question.  I personally think the Nano is a rip.  Sure, it's tiny, but it holds so few songs.  Why either
A)Slap down the $300 for more battery life, many more songs, and a bigger screen
or
B)Get a used one, like a 3G on the cheap.
Almost no one wants old B/W iPods, so they are really on the cheap.  You might want to take a look at them on eBay.
Sure, the full size iPod is bigger, but, in my opinion, it's a much better value and much better constructed.

I just got a black Ipod Video 30GB last week. *score*

it's awesome, the video resolution is great, and you gotta love the color.

you can get a $30 discount at apple.com if you are a student: http://store.apple.c...outingpage.html

plus about $15 in tax mad.gif
my total was $285 shipped.

I would never buy one on ebay as it seems ebay has become the palace of scams lately.

Agreed.  I love my 3rd Gen iPod.  Even if it is only 15gb and doesn't play videos or any of that shit.

Unfortunatley, I've only got 500MB free on it, and it's my birthday in a few days, and that space will probably be lost.  My only chance is to buy a bigger HD for it and upgrade.  It's half the price of buying a new one, and by far much cooler to have a 60-100gb 3rd gen iPod, in my opinion.

My Ipod Nano is small. I like it. Sure I can only listen to music on it and it only hods like 500 songs. But honestly, who needs more then 500 songs at a time? And who the hell is thinking watching movies on a tiny little IPOD is a good idea???

you wouldn't even believe how good the quality of it is. I enjoy while i'm in bed trying to go to sleep, and i can just turn it on and watch it in the comfort of my bed.

Alright, all the people up there who said the iPod/iTunes is bad, they are just retarded. I am a hardcore MS user so I never thought iPods would become my thing. I've owned every iPod generation at one point or another. The current one I'm using is the 30gb video (it's in my pocket incase you wanted to know) and a 15gb third gen. Once you start using the video you feel so bad for everyone that has to live with an 'older' iPod. Now for the Nano vs 5gen situation. As you stated they both have their pros and cons, but ignore the scratching problem. IMO they both get scratched as easily as the other. If you are that concerned get a white one since they are less visible. But the iPod stays in your pocket most of the time. At first I was wary of scratches too, I'd keep this things in cases and polish them every now and then. But now I don't give a damn, scratches are scratches. If anything it makes it look tougher. I'm sure you know the functionality of both. But now I believe you can watches videos on the nano with linux. I haven't updated mine since I only use it at the gym, and videos are useless there. As for the people bashing on the prices, tell me where you can find an MP3 that size with that fuctionality at all. You have nothing to compare the price to, so saying it's expensive won't get you anywhere. Yes, space wise it is expensive, but you are also paying for its impossible size and color screen plus the amazing apple UI. And for the people that say the iPod screen is too small for videos, I personally find it perfect. If it was any bigger I would feel akward watching in public, and if it was too small my arm would get tired holding it up to my face. I can easily rest it on my lap or on a desk during class and watch movies.
OK what are you planning on using the iPod for? If it's for the gym and small stuff liek that, go for a nano. but if you have a large music collection, get bored easily, take long trips, or whatever go for the video. Or just buy both wink.gif

first buy this...

then buy this to keep it safe from scratches and minor impacts...

i did and couldn't be any happier. i have over 40gb of music and several movies that i love to watch repeatedly so anything smaller would have been dumb for me.. i also have a dock installed in my car so i can pump video out of my ipod into my 7" indash monitor.. absolutely incredible!
