Xbox8164Adapter High-Res Sample Pictures and LG GDR-8164 Firmware BugF
« Reply #16 on: July 30, 2006, 09:52:00 AM »

I just flashed my LG GDR-8164 drive with the XBOX8164Flasher V 1.0,,   and when i hit "FLASHUP"  i got the message that the firmware that was already on the drive was the "SAME" as the version i was about to flash onto it... I went ahead and flashed regardless,, and it reported that it went successfully..

However, when i went to reboot, my computer, it would not reboot via the start/turnoff.... procedure,, i had to shut off via power switch,, then restart.

Did i do sumthin wrong?  Or,  is that normal when flashing these drives with this flasher.

Before flashing i slapped in COD 2  to see what the drive gives me,,  i got 2 folders,,,1. an audio ts with no files within it,,, and 2. a video ts with 6 files within it(4 short vids of the error message from M$ and 2 .BUP files).

After the flash,  while still connected to the PC, i got the same 2 folders, with the same files within them..

I guess theres some other way of seeing the files on the XBOX360 discs.

BTW, yes i did install the 8164 adapter prior to all this.

I have not yet replaced the drive in my XBOX1 yet so no info on how it reads media in there yet.

So if anyone has any insight as to the wierd message i got when flashing this drive,, or any other helpfull info it would be appreciated

Thanx

GAME ON!

So I'm in the process of modding this drive as I type this, and am now second guessing my choices in wire gauge.

I'm using wires scavenged from an old 350 watt psu for the 12v, 5v and ground wires, and 30 gauge for the other 6 points (including the 3.3v).

I'm now reasonably concerned that I've choses too small of a gauge or wire for this.

What would the optimal wire gauge be for this chip?

I'm finished the Mod and the drive is working perfectly.  Caused some strange explorer crashes in winxp once I had flashed the bios, but it works perfectly in my box.

Now... to make it fit properly.... help?  Does anybody know where I can find a tutorial on making the 8163/8164 fit insternally?

Hey,
from page 9 onwards http://www.paccforce...l_GDR-8163B.pdf
if the 8164 is the same as the 8163...
Good luck

Thank you very much  biggrin.gif

Since it's nearly 1:30, I'm heading to bed.  I'll have to do the hacking tomorrow.  Now if I could only convince my x3ir to play nice (aka:  turn my xbox on with the modchip enabled) with my xecutor3 I'd be a happy happy man...

I've finished working some magic and have sucessfully made this drive look like it's the original.  (I think my other half is going to kill me soon if I don't finish with this project.. hehe)  Anyway, now that everything is re-assembled, I decided to do some excessive testing.  Played originals, played backups, played movies & mp3's, etc etc etc.

But I ran into a problem and I'm unsure if it's a drive fault, a disc error (the game discs look clean and scratch free) or a problem with the most recent dvd2xbox.  Or maybe everything is working fine and I shouldn't worry.  But I am concerned and here's why:

When I copy certain original games (read: Mechassault) using dvd2xbox v0.7.7 I'm getting 2 file read errors.  One of the is update.xbe and the other is liveupdate.xbe (or something along those lines).

Since they both seem to be related to updating the game, and not actually playing the game I'm not overly concerned (yes, the game does seem play fine) but I would like some reassurance that this is normal behavior and not due to a hardware problem.

Please let me know if I have not been clear.  Any info will be greatly appreciated!

By 0.7.7 I meant 0.6.7.

Has anybody else run into this issue?  Or is it even an issue?  Are these files supposed to fail?

Am I missing something? How do I reinstall the XBOX front plate to the drive?

And what wire does everyone recommend for the various solder points?

Im just wondering is it possible to Mod the GDR-8164 drive without the adapter? I flashed the drive already with the firmware that works great, but i want to know if it's possible to make the Mod with the yellow power cable from the XBOX itself? I already watched some diagrams but im confused with so much names from soldering points... does anybody already modded a GDR-8164 drive without the adapter and is it fully working? uploading diagrams on how to solder on the board from the drive would be apreciated! I got soldering skills so thats not the problem wink.gif thx in advance!

I'm aslo wondering if it's possible to use the drive without the adapter, does anyone know what the adapter really does?

I've tried mod the LG GDR 8164B and here is the result:

1. the eject button works fine
2. if I tried tray out DVD tray from dashboard menu, it work
3. tray in DVD tray from dashboard menu, not work
4. initialise CD or DVD, not work (I'm still having problem with the Z signal)

I'm using IC XOR 74LS86 and followed the tutorial from ciccior http://www.geocities.com/ciccior2003/, because I think it looks the same point.

LDCD, LDVD, Tray In (LDIN), Tray Out (LDOUT) and Eject point

I've found a tutorial from xbox-tribe http://www.xbox360-t...r-lg-8164b.html

but the language, really confused me  blink.gif , I'm still working modding this drive, wish me luck guys!!

all the chip is on the adapter is a glorified logic chip .. just a case of converting what the 8164 puts out to what the xbox is expecting/wants ..
with the details that been posted im sure ya could do it with the right logic gates ... its just the adapter has been nicly done in one small chip, and mounted for us smile.gif

actually looking at that site, they have already done it ! .. theres hex code for a PIC16F628 pic chip that will convert it all and getting it all working just like the adapter !
i of course have not tried it or anything but its there !!!
