Microsoft: Soon to Be Your TV Manufacturer?

This tidbit went largely unnoticed yesterday, which I found strange. I saw the headline in today's remainders of press-wire stuff and immediately it made me wonder what Microsoft could be up to. The article itself talks about the two companies working together to develop connected entertainment applications, and it seemed to hint that these may be focused on the Chinese market. Either way, I found the investment in a hardware company interesting and if I may, I'll take a few stabs and potential larger meaning (if there is indeed one).

Exactly my thoughts too.

I can just imagine the missus face when the TV asks her to call M$ at the vital part of her favourite soap opera laugh.gif

Could be interesting, they could somehow make TVs that work better with the 360, but i highly doubt they quality will be anything like samsung

good point. just because they slap their name on the front of something doesn't mean they have actually made the components. it just means they've put them together.

kinda like most pcs. my sisters says that its a packard bell computer. but i know its got an intel processor and an ATI graphics card and such.

you never know they may turn out to be very good bits of kit. or you could get blue screen'd every time you try and watch pron ph34r.gif .

This is good news for me , if they turn out to be as reliable as the 360.

Oh I hope it is  LE32, 37, 42 range are dropping like flies here. I may even be able to afford another trip to Florida (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

yes, more than likely MS would assemble the components and possibly design the hardware and software interfaces - this would allow them significant control of the interoperability with all of MS's other products - not a bad move on their part.

we as consumers may also benefit from this - only time will tell...

No that is Surface and info has already been divulged. That is a PC Touch Screen Table. Nothing to do with TV.

All joking aside I wouldn't be surprised if MS TVs totally kicked ass.

A few years ago, I went to an event with an MS rep talking.  One point he brought up was how can you get an OS to boot in just a few seconds?  He said that there were Asian TV manufacturers that were getting embedded OSes to boot this quickly.

Why would MS care about that, and why would he have bothered to look into the TV boot time?  In hind sight, it's fairly obvious.
