Is A 42" Rca Tube Hdtv Worth $600?
« on: December 25, 2006, 07:29:00 PM »

someone wants to sell me a 42" rca hdtv. its the TUBE model, so it has the big long back side and all that shit. they want $300 cash, and im going to do about $300 in labor for something else for them, so basically im paying $600 for the tv. is the tv worth that price, or am i better off getting a 20"+ flat panel?

the tv supports 1080i and comes direct tv ready. ive seen the tv and it looks good, aside the huge tube.

I have the Same TV.

The Screen is really only 38" not 42" But still it measures out to be a bit bigger than what the manufacture says. I guess it's the way they measure (not true Diagnal).

Anyways I paid $2000 for this tv about 5 years ago.

It does 480i, 480P and 1080i - any 720P signial from a Component input is garbled - It does have the ability to Upscale the 720P picture to 1080i as long as you don't lock out the TV's ability to do it - by limiting the Xbox say to 480P and 720P only.

The TV is older - but it does have alot of advantages.

ITS A TUBE - by far the best 480P and 1080i picture and color you will get - as long as there isn't a million hours on it.  Mine is used about 4 hrs a week now (as I have a 60" wega) and at max was used 20 hrs a week for about a year so I'd say I have close to 400-500 hrs on it - so basicly I'd say mine is like Brand new and I treat it like gold as the largest TUBE HDTV you can find these days is like 30-32" max.  I really would like to keep this TV for another 5 or so more years.

Other advantages - It has a Built in HDTV Direct TV receiver built into it.  SO if you have the newest Card and a HDTV dish - you can get Direct TV in HD on this TV and its built right into the TV and MENU SYSTEM.

Downside - It only has 1 componet input so you will need a multibox for multiple HDTV accessories (Xbox, Gamecube, PS2, UPSCALE DVD PLAYER at 1080i is nice)

It does have multiple composite inputs for analog stuff and older systems Nes, snes, dreamcast ect..)

Downside - it is about 200-250 lbs and you are going to need 2 strong guys to put it where you want it.  I recommend having room to get behind the TV as you will not want to move this bitch to hook up stuff once it is in place or on a stand.  Also it is a unconventional Width in its base - unlike plasma - lcd -ect. it hard to find a stand for this thing - but i bought a $2000+ entertainment center for my bedroom to display this thing and it really is a great TV.

Here check it out.

FOR $300 cash and some work - I'd say its a great deal - BUT - for $600 the best largest LCD you can get is 32" maybe 36" if you know a friend or find a guy at the back of a truck, and they do 720P - so as long as 720p and upscaling to 1080i isnt an issue - I'd say why not.
