Do not listen to him, he has absolutely no idea what he is talking about. 2TB is the max size of hard drive you can put into an xbox, but since they dont make any that big it isnt a problem.
While I do agree that lenballs is in the dark on things, I wouldn't argue that it isn't worth updating the BIOS on the chip.  Xecuter now has (well, for a year or more) out a newer X2 BIOS, the X2CL 50xx series.  5035 is the latest and has been tested stable for the last year.  The feature set is nice and it is worth looking into.

Here's a question... true we are nowhere near drives that hit 2TB, but a quick check of available drives on newegg showed the largest IDE drive available is 750GB.  With FATX having a 256GB per partition maximum, this means you can't really use drives larger than 500GB.  (C, E, X, Y, Z total about 8GB, F max of 256GB, G max of 256GB equals total max drive size of 520GB not counting the goofy drive math.)  We're all (ok, many of us are) familiar with the C, E, F, (sometimes) G, X, Y and Z partitions.  With drives now exceeding 500GB is there any work being done on the original Xbox platform for support of H, I, J, etc. partitions?  I still haven't played around with XBPartitioner but I'm guessing at this point no BIOS or XBE would be able to handle or know to look for partitions past G.

Although the Xbox hard drive is natively formatted with the 16 KB cluster size, increasing it to 32 KB allows each partition to be up to 512 GB in size.

So the earlier statement regarding not going over 256GB in size was only relating to operations that do not use XBPartitioner and the 32KB clusters?  (Not trying to call you on anything, just wanting clarification.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy.gif)   Look me up on the Team Xecuter forums, you'll see I'm no noob and have plenty of respect for other big minds of the scene.)  Changing the cluster sizes doesn't confuse the BIOS at all, so long as the BIOS reads the partition from the HDD? (and supports LBA48 if the drive is 137GB+)  I sure you can't answer for all BIOSes, so the the answer can be based on your experience and knowledge.  Thanks for your answers and the additional info, this is probably the biggest thing I've learned with Xbox modding in quite some time.  My first impression was that we had hit the next wall of the system. (a la the old wall of 137GB)

Sigh... I'd really like to test this out and get familiar with the process, but I don't really want to (or *need* to) drop the coin on a 500GB+ HDD.

Yes, all BIOSes that I'm aware of do not support partitions over 256 GB in size (without relying on XBPartitioner to increase the limit to 512 GB).

Yes, you're correct.

I had this problem back in Nov 2003 when I got my hands on one of the first Maxtor 320GB hds. Paulb had just recently released his LBA48 patch to allow drives over 137gb. The biggest drive was 250gb until Maxtor released their 320gb for which I bought the day they went on sale at pricewatch.

I went through the same problems as you guys, tried all F drive because I didn't really see a need for a G drive if it wasn't needed. Proceeded to spend the next 12 hours FlashFXP enough to fill the drive. As soon as I reached 280GB (as Evox displayed, in reality it had to be the 256gb mark) I started getting FTP errors even though Evox showed more space available. I persisted trying to FTP to the point I corrupted the entire partition and was rewarded with a file named "~" that was a -2gb, thats negative 2gigs. Having lost all that time I came on here and questioned Paulb as to what he thought it may be, at which time he discovered the limit per partition.

Now, I have 3 400GB hds with an extender and my xbox is the centerpiece of my entertainment center. I have over the years repeated my experience to others on here that have run across this problem....

I do want to thank you guys for sharing the partitioning info to overcome the limit of 256gb. I have been content for the last couple years with my setup and hadn't really searched to see if any progress had been made to have drives larger than 400gb, it seems now you can have a 500gb unless there is a way to make F drive larger than 137gb but not the entire drive.

I haven't used XBPartitioner so I am unsure if you can also adjust partition sizes with it. If so, we may be able to have a 3 TB xbox when/if the 1TB Seagate drives come in IDE flavor. We can make F drive 500gb and G the rest, with C/E/XYZ each partition should still fall under the 512GB limit per partition.

Well I didn't try it but XBpartitioner did give options to make more partitions, calling them "custom partitions". What I've done is set all my extra hd space directly to the F partition, so I have approx 492GB of my 500GB as my F partition. So far it's working fine, although I haven't reached the 256GB point yet, that'll take me another week or so to copy more of my files over to it. Seeing it's now formatted with 32k clusters, all should be fine. I mean, my iND bios and my X2 4981 which I'm currently using see the partition and use it just fine, so there's no confusion. Indeed many of us have found this info very interesting and helpful, and I thank the people kind enough to take the time to help inform us here on the scene.  happy.gif

Jason, thanks for your info.  Please keep us posted on what happens when you pass 256GB.  See if you can max that sucker out! biggrin.gif

...Reformat your F drive with xbpartitioner and it will format with 32k clusters making data corruption happen after 512gigs.

is this the preferred method for a 500gb drive - or is it better to have it in two 250GB 16k cluster partitions?

or does it really not matter, so long as your doing one or the other?

Either way will work, but I would prefer formatting with 32k clusters just so I can have one big F. That way you dont have to remember what game/movie/song is in which partition.

Well I have just over 200GB left in my F partition, and all is well. So XBpartioner did the trick (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
Thanks again guys,

I have a few questions. First let me give you my current situation. I have a soft modded xbox with a 250 gig drive that I installed using xboxhdm. So, I am a little down with the scene.

Now, I want to setup another xbox, I'm looking to get a 750 gig drive, though I want to verify if it will even work in the box before I plop down three times as much as the xbox will cost for the hard drive. I will be getting the seagate version.

Now my questions:

Does it matter how much free space is left on the c and e drives <--this question really pertains more to my current situation

Can I set up my 750 gig drive as such: ~1 gig on C ~10 gigs on E ~500 on F and the rest on G:

I have read through this thread and it seems as if I can get the max if I use xboxpartitioner and set it to 32k clusters...What I want to know is if 500 gigs that allows is for the whole drive or for each partition. And, does it really matter how big the c and e partitions are.

With my current setup I only have about 100 mbs free on my c drive, 500mb free on E, and 1gb free on F. And, everytime I boot to avalaunch it says something about the lack of free space and how it may cause trouble...I'm wondering what that trouble is and if I should delete files on some partiton to get rid of it.

Also, if I need a mod chip to make the 750 gig drive to work that will not be a problem, as I have an xecuter3ce chip sitting around after I bought it to fix a problem I had created with my softmodded drive...though I've yet to figure out the real advantage of mod chips

I post about this problem about 2-3 time per week. But people still keep asking why they have data corruption.

Ye, people ask what an eeprom is, or how to use xbins, or will my old xbox hd work in my new xbox. Although pinning threads works a bit, people still can't be bothered siffting through 20 pages of peoples comments about specific problems. You're completely right, far too many people here do little or no research before expecting people like you to give up your time re-answering the same questions time and time again. Cappi, you are doing a great job! (patience is a virtue...) lol, even through im still relative noob!

I agree, however I think if the board got the search function up and running it would help reduce the number of same topic posts.
