I've been looking in to this adapter for a while. It still sounds good to me, as long movies still work under XBMC biggrin.gif . So the problem is dual layer xbox disks? blink.gif  i don't mind taking the top off my xbox to rip dual layered disks on to the hdd. But the problem is patx said it's for modchip installers, so will it work with my softmod? uhh.gif But if they get this fixed it would save me sometime taking the top off all the time. tongue.gif

softmods are fine, he meant it in respects of it had been modded ... and thus uses a dif bios ...

and yes, when used in the xbox, just dual format xbox games are at fault .

I know support for this application has been pretty much dropped.  But, at last, I'm here for some help and guidance.  I've soldered the chip to the drive and have flashed it with the software on their website.  And yet I still can't get it to work.

When I hit the eject button, the drive opens for a few seconds, and then closes without me touching anything.  If I place a disc into the drive, the xbox doesn't seem to read it.  It doesn't even spin the disc.  The xbox is modded with the TSOP method, and I've also tried it on a soft modded xbox.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Well, how are u using the drive are you using the adapter or just the firmware?
because i don't have the adaptor yet but with a Y-cable and 7200rpm hdd, a 80cm fan the drive wouldn't do anything(not enough power) so i used my stock drive it worked laugh.gif , but i use a old computer to power the drive until i get the adapter too bad the firmware can't be patched for full xbox support. Patx seams to
be hiding from the scene maybe he's scared of flamers? Just hope someone is a firmware patcher here huh.gif

That's a nice story, but I don't believe it. My ISP or computer delaying their answers?? Come on...

I've mailed them twice (with about a month between!), asking nicely if there was ever going to be another firmware to fix the DL problems. This is a simple yes or no question, but still no word. It's a shame really, I would have liked this to be the greatest drive ever.

Does anybody know if the 8163b has trouble with DL?? I'm thinking of getting one off eBay.

thats a good Q...
as it uses the old firmware from an actual xbox .. i would presume yes ..
i do have one maybe i can try ..

so it is a good drive for the xbox itself,
BUT it will not off course be able to get security secters etc, of a disc
nor will it read 360 games if used in a PC
also of course its hard to get hold of, so may as well get a proper xbox drive !

but it is a alternative ... none the less

so ok it seems as talismoon, and patx have forgotton/have no time/not interested
but remeber these are the people that didnt really have any/much input into the actual firmware alterations
its the people who DID the modifications  that we need to get hold of/talk too

but the BIG quetion is HOW !!!! as Mrpresident is the only one i know of, and with no contact details...
there was another person too ... will have to search the forums back when he was doing it (was here and on xboxhacker)

of course we could get people like Maximus, or Garyopa to have a look but they would be like starting from scratch as not knowing what was done before etc ..... and therefore its VERY unlikly they would attempt to do it...

so were does it leave leave this 95% completed drive !  ?

So as far as I can gather this adapter does the following:

Recordable Media:
CD-R
CD-RW
DVD-R (DL)
DVD+R (DL)
DVD-RW
DVD+RW

Retail DVD Movies
Retail CD-Audio
Retail Xbox DVD5 and CDR

However it does NOT play:
Retail DVD9(DL) Disks.

Is this all correct?

Does it real DL at all? (ie. Backups on DVD9 disks or multi-game DVD9 Disks) or no DVD9 period after the first layer?

the Dual layer aspect... it seems to read the first layer fine ... be it original or backup ..
but when it need anything from the second layer it craps ot ...

but i have read that its ok on dual layer movies in XBMC??
so maybe its just not dealing with the diferent layer break which games have??
will have to test this to really confirm ...

Completely true.

I have rallisport challenge 2 (original). As soon as i want to play a track of second layer (e.g. track SS3 australia), you get a dirty disc error. Also second layer dont show up in explorer xbox.
Then, i swapped drive and put in orginal samsung xbox drive (from a 1.6 xbox)
result : it works flawlessy. I also copied to xbox HDD : result 100%.
