So is this worth it or not? Im in need of a new drive as my phillips has died. Will it work on a softmodded box (to play originals) and where can i buy one diveno charges way to much to ship such a small thing(almost 50% of what you paying for the adapter thats to high)As far as the drive the cheapest i found was newegg for $22 shipped add that to the $29 shipped for the adapter and i have a total of $51 i can get a new thompson on ebay for $30 so is this really worth it? Will it be as reliable as my other xbox with the samsung drive in it? it just sux when its going to cost $50 or so to fix the xbox and i can buy a used one for around $80 sad.gif

I'd say get the premodded one from divineo.  If you have a second xbox that you can use to rip any of your dual layer discs, then you'll love this drive.  It kills the stock xbox dvdrom performance.

Just remember that it doesn't work with an unmodded xbox... yet.

OK I tried to copy Jade Empire onto the HDD using the 8164 with the hacked firmware, and it failed on 72 files.  The disk is 6.7GB in size so it obviously uses both layers.   Naturally I then tried the copy using my original Samsung Xbox DVD drive and the copy was successful.  It is at least worth noting that the 8164 was hitting 7.5MB/s transfer rates while the Samsung did not exceed 5MB/s.

I think we definitely need new firmware to assist with this problem.

I feel like a real arse for finding this problem but at least it was common, not just an installation error. I found another bug the other day but it was with a Panasonic HD TV, its says it supports RGB but when using it nothing shows up. Im quite surprised that big companies dont test their products that much anymore. So has anyone heard or seen of a new firmware for the the LG drive?

Has there been any progress in getting the bug with reading dual layer originals discs corrected?

How do you edit a post??? (Edit button is not visible with last post)

Anyway,
I also emailed the people from http://www.xbox8164adapter.com/ a couple of times under different accounts about the dual layer problem.
no replies whatsoever.
The product simply doesnt work as adversited.
Probably they know it too, otherwise i would have received some replies...

Features:
Boots all XBOX CD-R backups  - CHECK
Boots all XBOX CD-RW backups - CHECK
Boots all XBOX DVD-R backups - CHECK
Boots all XBOX DVD+R backups - CHECK
Boots all XBOX Originals - Well, it boots, but wont play dual layer games properly
Use to extract XBOX360 original games - PROBABLY NOT

Notes:
- Use only with the official 8164 adapter witch can be found at www.xbox8164adapter.com
- You will need a modded XBOX to use a PC DVD drive in a XBOX.
- If you use it to extract XBOX360 games ignore all read errors.

Probably when you extract xbox360 games and ignore all errors, you probably end up with only layer0 copied.... smile.gif... hmmmm

Up till now, i'm a little dissapointed with their product....

i too have been looking into these drives as a tool for backing up 360/xbox games mainly cause they support the Wii games too !!!
would be GREAT to have an all in one drive to backup all ya console games !

im now testing it for backing up games .. from what i can see ya right can backup single layer disc's OK
and support DMI,PFI, and game data (so thats a NO on the SS) ..

so only needs a few more tweaks and would be perfect !  shame they got this far and gave up it seems sad.gif

such a shame that it got this far and not complete finished

Agreed, patx really doesn't seem to care at all about supporting his little product and is basically screwing over everyone who bought the adapter by not advertising that it has unresolvable issues when reading from the 2nd layer on original Xbox games on dual layer DVDs. WARNING: to everyone who is researching this adapter, DO NOT BUY IT! You'll get no help from anyone, including the developers of the adapter. Look at all the posts in this thread talking about how dual layer discs don't work. Now try to find a single post by patx that addresses any of the reports.

Indeed,
I've emailed and PM'd patx twice,
emailed the people at www.xbox8164adapter.com several times.
I even contacted those people at talismoon who make the solderless version more than once
All under different email accounts.

Needless to say i didnt get any reply whatsoever......   grr.gif
Maybe they are all the same people under different websites... hmmm

I installed the LG 8164 today with the solderless adapter and it swallows a lot. My disappointment was big however, when I put in my PGR2 and Psychonauts, which both told me to put the discs in my Xbox (this standard screen which I think pops up when you put Xbox games in a regular dvd-player). I stumbled upon this thread and started experimenting with Dual Layer discs.

Under XBMC, my DL dvd+r with Escaflowne mkv's worked without a glitch, so I got happy.
I put in my Lord of the Rings: Two Towers extended version (which is dual layer) and XBMC filemanager told me it was 6,6 GB in size. I usually open dvd's with my xboxdash.xbe, and this time I got treated to a black screen. I started cursing my lack of research before buying the drive. But XMBC was able to read the size, remember? What if I play the dvd with that?

So I rebooted and opened up the Video menu. Guess what? The disc played flawlessly under XBMC! So maybe it's not only due to firmware-stuff in the drive, but also something crappy in combination with xboxdash.xbe... from which games are also launched.

Now I don't know if this is important or helpful to anyone, but I just thought I'd share my findings. And I keep hoping that there'll be a firmware hack somewhere in the not too distant future.

Cheers.

Thank god for the link on there own homepage smile.gif direct to here informing me that the adaptor/drive combo is unfinished.

Maybe if they have no intention of future support for the customers they might want to remove there community link.

True

But at the same time you should (expect it to work)... as it should work and does not.

So in my eyes it should not have been out in circulation just yet.

still dreaming of an all in one drive ...
woud be the nuts as ya can also get these drives well cheap in UK

if the firmware is fixed this drive could be used for....

1. total xbox1 replacement drive(in xbox)
2. used in PC to backup all ya xbox, and 360 games
3. used in PC to backup all ya Wii games

just needs second layer, and SS retrieval fixing

Last firmware was released in july 2006.
It's april 2007 now...
Nobody ever replies that sell the adpater, they're not making new firmware.. what do YOU think?  sad.gif  mad.gif  grr.gif

Installed it in my xbox though.. took me a lot of hacking and sawing to make it fit (i didnt want to shave off the plastic thingy for the screw that is on the top of the case, so i made a hole in the side of the drive smile.gif
like the original xbox drive has... i can recommend you that smile.gif
Maybe, i should post a pic smile.gif

yes its been awhile .. maybe trying to contact the actually people who worked on the firmware would be better
as PatX, and talismoon, are not the people who inputed into the actual firmware ...

and yes go for it JRLS smile.gif would be nice, even if it is too bring this subject back into the light !
