Just wondering Patx how the firmware was coming along?  Any estimate on a release date for the firmware?

Bump just wondering if there's any progress on the firmware, I've got my 8164 adaptor and drive, all installed and reading DVD-R discs beautifully, very fast!

Does anybody have any pics of their 8164 drive installed in the Xbox case with the Xbox lid on? I've started cutting up the caddy to make it fit, but the 8164 tray is too wide for the Xbox case, I plan to mass sell this drive so want the easiest way to fit it into the case without major surgery.

I guess attaching the Xbox DVD bezel on the outside to make it look all original is asking too much.

Anyways, thanks for the adaptor, it'll save me heaps of time as is installing from DVD-R, new firmware to read originals would be perfect.

They seem to be too busy counting the money they made on these adapters, I wouldn't expect a firmware soon if at all.

There hasn't been an update for a while so I'm guessing the firmware has them stumped.
I have two of these drives sitting here and I'm waiting for that firmware breakthrough.

I am not sure if this is the right area but I have a question for anyone with some insight. This adapter is cool,
no doubt, but does anyone know if anyone else is working on something like this or if there is a cheaper price somewhere else because I am not gonna pay 22 usd for a tiny chunk of pcb, concidering, I had to pay 27.99 for the drive. Any HELP, is appreciated. Hell, after the price of this adapter and the drive, I might as well track down a friggin samsung 605b!!  thank you!!

We did it again !! After building the original adapter, team xbox8164adapter coded you all a 8164 xbox firmware... You can get it on the official website in the download section !!!
Watch for our next release with full xbox1 drive emulation and x360 SS extraction.
ENJOY and support team xbox8164adapter !!! & please give credit where it goes !!!
don t ask me and don t use our firmware if you not want to support !!!

support us & we will deliver as we alaways did !!!!
Do something about your English, because you certainly do not look professional at the moment. rolleyes.gif

@xboxmods2977

Don't worry. I'm sure that the adapter gets reverse engineered, so that you can make your own version of it. The catch is in a single chip which modifies one or more signals of the drive so it is usable in the Xbox.. One just has to check what goes in and what comes out...

Oh, and the suggested retail prices (23usd/20eur) are indeed pretty high for such an adapter. wink.gif

Hello everyone, searching on a web page I read about this adapter. I have some questions for anyone who knows about the subject.  I bought a 8163B (obviously not black the letter B doesnt mean everything I guess, hehehe), and I found this new 8164B with the adapter. I flash the 8163B with the 8050L_FW_Flasher_FIXED and works fine reading originals. but I dont want to cut the yellow dvd drive cable of the xbox. I can use this adapter with the 8163B? the other question is I think Im going to buy the 8164B to have other drive for backup purpose. I search on some stores and have the black drive with the model 8164B but when you search on the technical specs, say 8163B is that the same drive? other question is I read on the 8164B webpage that have the new firmware to play originals, anyone test the firmware?

thank you, and sorry for my english  is not  my language. smile.gif

hey guys, I bought 2 LG GDR-8164B-BK's for 24.95 Canadian (about 22.50 USD) and was wondering because I would only really like to order 1 adapter, is it at all possible to wire the second one up by hand to my 1.0 box? I want to use the adapter on my 1.6 box, but the added expense of 2 adapters is too high...

regards, Mark

No.

Patx has decided not to share the design of the adapter with the community. That means that the only thing you can do (next to buying another adapter) is reverse engineer the one you already have. rolleyes.gif

if that's the case that I cannot just wire it up myself, as I could with a 8163b, then I still have the option to return the 8164's, I guess I wont bother placing an order for his adapter at all then, because at 40USD (with s/h) for the adapter, and the cost of the 2 8164's, I can get 2 8163's; then I'll have 2 working drives, opposed to 1....

thanks anyways, Mark

EDIT: sorry about the above 2 posts, I tried to add a reply, it loaded fine, but didn't show up, and then all 3 showed up, odd...

Yes.  It does not appear to include wires.

I used 30 gauge wire for all solder points excel 5v, 12v and grnd.   For those 3 points I used cables from an old dead power supply that I had sitting in my box of misc. electronic parts.

FYI - IDE cables use 30 guage wires.  So if you don't want to go out and buy a couple hundred feet at your local electronics shop you no know where else you can get some 30 guage.

I say 30 gauge, but I've heard anything from 26 to 30 works fine.

If anyone did want to reverse engineer this adapter, the high res pics give away most of the pcb connections.
Combine the pics with the install instructions and the DVD power cable pinout and all that is left is to figure out what the attiny11l-2pi microcontroller is doing. It really can't be that hard for anyone with some basic/intermediate electronics ability. I'd do it, but I'm not interested enough at this time...maybe later.

I do think that the design should be shared. Look at the stuff from Pablot/Sickmods. (Or even Xecuter lately. ) You can easily find enough info to build your own Xerc.

If the design was public, 99% of the people that would want this are going to buy it anyway, even most of the people with the abilty to build it themselves aren't going to bother. But I feel that a significant amount of respect is gained by releasing a full explaination of the circuit design and microcontroller code.
