Xbox8164adapter: Adapter to Connect LG-8164 PC Drive to Xbox1
« Reply #30 on: June 16, 2006, 10:12:00 AM »

My Xbox sammy drive failed on me so I was looking for a replacement. I saw this Adapter so bought one and the 8164B drive to go with it which I found for £15.00, a whole lot cheaper than an original Xbox drive. I then fitted it into the drive which was really easy no harder than fitting a modchip and bingo it reads anything you throw at it!!!!
I'd backed up all my originals anyway before the sammy failed just stumped when I buy a new game but hopefully the firmware should be sorted by then.

No.  It's only going to allow the playing of originals.

I think what he was asking, is that I am about to ask.

So if you do NOT have a hardmod (modchip) or softmod in your xbox all you have to do is attach this adapter to the DVD drive, patch it, and run the firmware update to the adapter?

Thanx for the replies. I was aiming for "The Specialist" sammy drive hack kinda thing, hey either way this drive would be cool when the firmware gets released. Mainly was askin for noobs so they dont ask the same question over and over again. Either way i might end up buying one with an adapter. My wife LOVES being able to pop any disc in the drive and playing it.

PS I have a regular PC drive hooked up to my second box with the .xml in XBMC configured to use it.

EDIT: I wish there was still a way to use 2 Hard drives at one time tho.

If they ever release a working firmware, which I doubt looking at this thread,

hehe !!! this thread has nothing to do with our FW. This was to make the 8050l FW work in the 8164 witch could have work but too much rerouting is needed... The 8164 PCB looks like a spaghetti and it is not working 100%. I am a hardware guy, I do testing, I don't do coding, at that time I was looking for help. The thread you refer to didn't stop ...we continued PM with BrotherVlad because the Dangerous Brothers don't want to get involved in it publicly...But they gave much help !!!

When I was doing research to make the adapter, I told ppls I was going to produce and sell it. Like you many doubters requested my schematic cause they didn't belived I was going to. BUT I DID.

Now our main coder is xt5 from http://www.ingenieria-inversa.cl/ , he has done more tools than anyone on the scene for firmware hacks. The thread you refer to was started on march 16th... Many progress have been done since then smile.gif. THE FIRMWARE WILL GET RELEASE NO MATTER WHAT YOU SAY.

We all know that the 8163b is simple to mod ! This is for the 8164b witch IS NOT working on the Xbox. LG has stopped production of the 8163... Sooner or later only 8164b will be available, when that time comes you will use my adapter & my firmware and be very happy about writing your backups at full speed.

LG GDR 8164B - DVD-ROM

Sells between €12 and €17 euro in Europe

I payed not so long ago €60 (Shipping from Germany to Belgium included) for a pre-modded LG-8163b (was going to do it myself, but all drives i ordered came DOA, so i gave up and and took the easy road)

Where do you find them for 12 euro!! I would like to know wink.gif

How did your drives came in DOA.. did they die during shipping??!

hi,
Don't know if this is the right place...but I'll ask anyway...
I've tried using the 8164 without using the adapter that I one can buy on http://www.xbox8164adapter.com/
1st thing I did was to hook up a NAND gate and den Invert the Tray Out Signal (so now I get both the tray in and tray out), and then I hooked up LDCD and LDDVD together in a OR gate configuration, I can get the DVD to eject and everything, however it seems that the Drive pulses the LDCD/LDDVD signals for a brief moment before the unit is actually fully initialised, thus the dashboard always shows up as "unknow disc". Putting the disc in and then resetting the xbox will make it load...but I wonder if there's an easy way to address this problem without having to resort to buying the Adapter?? I reside in Singapore, and as such getting the adapter is gonna be a problem.

this sounds real good, imagine an xbox reading an original xbox disc at 16x speed. That will be awesome.

hey,  I bought this adapter and installed it today.  It isn't working for me though.  Everything looks good and i've checked over all my solder points.  The eject works for sure.  If i hit the eject button on the xbox, the tray pops open.  If i put in a dvd i can hear it spin.  If i put in a cd, it'll spin really fast. but it says on the dashboard (xbmc) drive is open ... if i click close drive from xbmc, it'll say busy.  It just won't work.  From this description, can anyone tell me maybee which specific point is bad or what might be wrong.  I've checked my jumper setting.  I can't figure this one out huh.gif

Ok, I noticed that i can boot with the eject button ... the tray opens ... and then i can close the cd drive with the eject button after it boots, but once its in, the eject button won't open the tray anymore.  Also, when i turn the xbox off, it doesn't completly turn off for about 3-5 seconds.  I tried putting the dvd rom in my pc to see if i screwed something up, but it went right to work no problem!  Could it have anything to do with the little microchip on the adapter.  Could there be something missing?  Do i have to flash this drive with some kind of special firmware?  I need some help.  Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

I'm just patiently waiting for the firmware to be released before I order this adapter.
I already have an 8164b and just ordered another one just in case I screw something up.  smile.gif

I have just completed the mod on a brand new 8164b drive. Everything seems to work, but the drive will only play copies of DVD movies. I can't get it to recognize a factory pressed DVD movie and it's mainly for a dedicated XBMC machine.

Is this also firmware related or did I screw up the mod somehow?  I have another machine so I don't care if it plays Xbox games or not at this point.

Update! The modified 8164b plays original DVD movies fine in my version 1.4 box with the X3CE!  It does not work properly in my version 1.0 box with TSOP.

Brilliant mod patx, now I want another one for a spare.   I still have to work out the least invasive way to mount it. I can't wait for the finished firmware.
