LG GDR 8164B - DVD-ROM

Sells between €12 and €17 euro in Europe
ad some shipping (€5 let's say)
ad a €20 for the connector (from the european store (in the Netherlands))
ad €5 (let's say shipping to Europe (Belgium)

€44 (if you take the €17 one, the €12 are harder to find, but you can find them if you take the time to compare and look out for it) and you have a new xbox drive, i say that's descent.

I payed not so long ago €60 (Shipping from Germany to Belgium included) for a pre-modded LG-8163b (was going to do it myself, but all drives i ordered came DOA, so i gave up and and took the easy road)

If only this would have come a few months earlier biggrin.gif

Maybe i get me one of those drive's with this adaptor as backup drive once my other xbox samsung drive  will die biggrin.gif

Yeah the firmware to read originals is indeed needed before I would buy it otherwise its useless because you won't be able to backup your original games if it doesnt read them blink.gif (I guess its good for torrent fiends)

I'l definately be keeping an eye on these.

I've been keeping an eye on this (it's not new news), but have been reluctant to buy the adapter since they still haven't released firmware to make the drive play original xbox games.

Once this breakthrough is made, I'll be buying these adapters (and drives) in bulk.
Until then, I'll keep an eye on the progress.

I found plenty of the 8164b's.  Is this one better?  Thanks.  I should have done this a long time ago!

^I meant 8163b not 4b.  oops.

Cool.  Appreciate it!

I have found the 8163b's too.  Are these better to mod or what?  Looks like a pain in the ass.  Man I need to find a run down on modding all of these drives!

Very nice. I remember when i first got my samsung, i thought it was the god of all drives. In the last 6 months or so, it won't read any burnt dvd's from my pc and it struggles to read even normal discs. Why are xbox drives simply so unreliable?

For those wondering about the different LG Electronics drive models/SKUs:

GDR8164BB = Bulk model (no software, however, cables/screws/manual ARE included), BEIGE color
GDR8164BI = Retail model (includes software, cables/screws/manual, and retail box), BEIGE color
GDR8164BK = Bulk model (no software, however, cables/screws/manual ARE included), BLACK color

Would the firmware (when released of course), allow backups on a non- hardmod/softmod xbox?

It might be really late but I have no idea what you are asking. Maybe me saying that, the firmware is for this drive so that it can play original Xbox games, will clarify some thing. Maybe what your asking is can I hook this drive up to a PC after it has the new firmware and make an ISO of an Xbox CD, who knows.

I think he means something like the 360 firmware hack.  In other words, if you copied a game and didn't patch the xbe.  Would the firmware fake the media check?  That would allow backups to play on live without worry.

I also wondered this although, it wouldn't mean anything to me since i don't have xbox live.

Edit: typo

No.  It's only going to allow the playing of originals.

this was actually my question. that would making backing up my games so much easier. but then i havent boughten very many games lately so i guess the few i buy a month isnt that much of a hassle to back up.

im sure if someone could de-compile the firmware the will soon be released they might be able to remove or bypass the media check and play the backups on a unmodded system.

does the firmware get flashed to the drive or to the chip on the adapter? will be very interested in these when it can play original disks. My school has about 30 of the drives, so i can just go buy any cheap drive and swap them. the school computer admin will let me!
