Most 3D software is way too expensive if you just want to fool around with it. I'd recommend getting familiar with Maya PLE which is legally free to download.
http://usa.autodesk....x...&id=7639525Blender is another legally free program you can use.
http://www.blender.o...ender.31.0.htmlI've been a student of Maya for almost two years now. I've used Maya Complete in the classroom and Maya PLE at home. If you don't mind spending a little money, you could buy a very good Maya book between $30 - $60 which includes a copy of Maya PLE. I recommend a Sybex book because they got this stuff down cold. I swear by the book I own. You should probably start with the 3D for Beginners book.

You could easily find better prices on Amazon, though. The 3D for Beginners book costs less than $25 at Amazon (
link). I picked up the Mastering book almost a year ago for $50 at B&N. You can probably find it much cheaper now.
P.S. If any of these links stop working at any time, PM one of the GFX mods, and it'll be fixed. The same thing goes if you guys find new software (preferrably free;
free) that's graphics-oriented. Just PM one of us and we'll put your link up. Trial software is okay, but it usually only works for 30 days. Once the trial is over, the dream is shattered. lol
