Drive Won't Read Dvd's After Laser Replacement
« on: June 12, 2006, 09:19:00 PM »

Just got a new laser off ebay for my samsung (have had her for quite a long time and I've been getting quite a bit of not reading media) so I installed the new one (first time doing this)

Now this one makes weird whirring and mechanical sounds and it makes a noise like it's scratching the dvd (but I don't think it is) and it either says No Disc or Unknown

Any idears? It was my first install so I could have screwed up something. I believe the laser ribbon is in right and all. I am confused and a little bit scared for my well being and my xboxes

you screwed the two little screws too tight and it raised the bars to high.. from the top youcan turn them down counterclockwise a half turn on the to circle black peices on the ends of the 2 bars

I tried that but no avail. I did screw with those bar levels a very long time ago though, so I am not sure which way I'm going when I turn them. Am i turning em too high? Too low? I don't know! I'll keep working on it but I don't see good things in my future

Where did you get the tut for the install? Llamma's has a nice one. As for FleaBay for getting 'new' parts, I won't knock it too hard but buyer beware should mean something to you. Try cleaning the lens as well, your greasy hands 'no offence'  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)  might have dirtied it up.

I didn't get a tut. I just read the llamas samsung disassembly and went along from there. I can't find a site that talks about taking the laser off and on and what not.

but the seller on ebay said "god bless" to me so it has to work!

I'll try taking it apart again and redoing the dumb thing but still I'm all sorts of scurrd

I just got this info for ya

Got disk read errors on your Samsung DVD drive? Well we can fix you up with a NEW replacement lens. There are 2 types of Samsung lenses make sure your matches the item in the picture particularly the ribbon cable width. before buying this item.

You must remove solder bridge in order for this item to work!

Never had to replace a laser before, I'll see if I can find this solder bridge for ya.
Note: 2 types of lenses, does it look like your old one?

now the diagram I see is the SOH D16 laser, we will work with that.
ok, right beside the ribbon connector, with the laser pointed down there are two spots of solder to the right, located right above the screw
desolder these two points completely, use desoldering braid or wick. These were anti-static points for shipping.
Hope this helps out for ya. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
