Samsung Dvd Drive - Opens Then Closes Quickly
« on: May 31, 2006, 07:46:00 PM »

Howdy all... I have tried searching the internet for a resolution but have had no luck thus far and searching through the text version of the forums is like playing "You sunk my battleship" - randomly clicking on page numbers and all..... but.....

My sammy drive started closing as soon as it reaches the full open position as of late.  Reads and seems to spin up discs fine.

Has anyone run across this or heard of a resolution?

Thanks.

Yep - sure does.  I tried the drive in another xbox I have and it does the same thing.  I took it apart and did not see anything in the mechanism.  I am about to take some compressed air to it. (avoiding the laser)

Check to see if anything is obstructing its path from opening all the way. If it it senses its not opening all the way it will close, almost like your pushing the tray in gently.

Yea, I thought that might be it.  It comes open and stays there for about 1 second and then closes.  I checked the rails and did not find anything.  I did  notice, however,  the case was full of bits of trash and junk.  I am cleaning it all out now.  We will see what happends.  Thanks.

Heck, it might even be the P/E board, a trace to the eject pushbutton switch might be messed up. Does it do this on a different box?

Yea... like Creg said,  I tried another box to test that potential problem.

Creg, me too.  I am hoping for the best.  Those Sammys are about as good as they come.  I will report back.  I guess it is a good thing nobody has came back with.  "Ohh, yea, that happends all the time... blah blah"

yeah it definitely seems like a mechanical issue, possibly the switch that detects the tray being open is broken (it opens and waits for teh tray_open signal, but it never comes so it assume sthe tray got stuck so it closes)

yeah go at it with the air, just do it in an open space unless you like seeing little sparkly things and ringing in your ears... that stuff makes you weird. so yeah, get some fresh air

Nah, I had this problem. All I did to fix it was take the drive apart, clean it, added some greese or lub gel on the tray track and laser track, reset the tray mech and put back together. Worked like new!

Good Luck

Yeah, I would try the lube and also check out the gear mechanism that opens and closes the tray. The system that lifts the disc up off of the tray when the disc is loaded could also be a rare, but possible issue as that will trigger the thing to eject and stuff.

I went to the closest store that would have air and they were out and then like an idiot, remembered that I have onboard air in my Jeep.  So I ran out, turned on my compressor and blew the thing out.  Put some lithium grease on the rails for good measure and put her back together.  Worked like a charm.  I also blew out the case as it was pretty dirty.

Thanks for all the input.

I would suggest you hijackers... lol...j/k... do the same.  Except for Leaf - yours sounds more like an actual button or  board trace.  But it would not hurt to clean out the drive itself.  Just mind the lens.

Thanks to all!
