Xbox Versions Above V1.0
« on: May 05, 2006, 05:26:00 AM »

This has probably been asked before, but since the search feature is still offline it makes it difficult to search for stuff. Anyway, I'm wondering why did MS realease new versions of the xbox? do they have better hardware? better game performance? better compatibility? bug fixes? or fixes so certain hacks cannot be done?
I've always wondered whats different in all the xbox versions and if im missing out on anything?

most revisions of the board were either due to a cheaper alternative or to prevent mods.
The tsop size of the 1.0 was 1mb compared to the 256kb of 1.2 and greater. There isnt really any significant difference in performance, although it seems the 1.6' were made quite cheaply in comparison to older xbox' which use different brand of chips.

Yea.. and in versions 1.1-1.6, you dont have the daughterboards.. which cheapened costs as it was made directly into the motherboard.. power supplys were later updated do to some reason (thus why they handed out free power cords with surge protector dealys on them).. theres a huge story behind the PSUs, but i dont remember any of it.

Umm what else, i think v1.0 was the only version to have a fan on the cpu (or is it gpu?).. i know they got rid of that in the newer models... umm, theres different models of harddrives and dvd drives... umm, thats really all i can think of right now.. but im sure there has been tons of changes mainly for costs..

Thats a nice little article there, question though.

QUOTE

1.3

The third revision, 1.3, along with 1.4, seems to be the most common, so it may have been produced in the greatest quantities. This version saw the introduction of the Samsung DVD-ROM drive (see Figure 3.5), although Thomson and Philips models were still used throughout the production life of the Xbox in lesser quantities. This version also introduced a second Seagate drive (10GB) in some units (see Figure 3.6). This version also used the Conexant video chip

I have a 1.1 and yet, it has a samsung dvd drive in it. WHY????
