Vga Controller Mod For Your Old School Controllers
« on: May 03, 2006, 05:06:00 PM »

ok first off i want to thank the guy who did the six button genesis controller vga mod @ xerxes3rd.net.. he beat me to a vga tut so he gets credit for that.. i will however elaborate way beyond what he did. to start i will show a tut on a genesis six button, a nes , a snes, a saturn, a sega mater system, an atari 2600 and an atari 7800 controller..

first thing you need to know is my wire color pinout:

------- BLUE -------------------- +5V

------- EXPOSED WIRE -------- GROUND

TP63 - RED -------------------- LEFT TRIGGER

TP19 - PINK ------------------- BACK

TP64 - GREY ------------------- RIGHT TRIGGER

TP18 - BROWN ---------------- START

TP13 - BROWN/WHITE ------- UP

TP15 - WHITE ----------------- DOWN

TP16 - TURQUOISE ----------- LEFT

TP17 - ORANGE --------------- RIGHT

TP69 - GREEN ----------------- BLACK

TP72 - YELLOW ---------------- WHITE

TP71 - RED/WHITE ------------ Y

TP70 - BLACK/WHITE -------- X

TP68 - PURPLE ---------------- B

TP67 - BLACK ----------------- A

take the female end of your vga cable cut it and very carefully strip it like this
(IMG:http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/hsdemonz/tut/stripped.jpg)

now take apart your fatboy controller and remove the memory card casing and shove your vga cable in the bottom memcard slot like this
(IMG:http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/hsdemonz/tut/wire1.jpg)
(IMG:http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/hsdemonz/tut/wire2.jpg)

Now go to here
anduse the 2 pics to find the solder points on the fatboy controller.. he does not show the l and r triggers but you can find them really easy. remember use my wire color scheme not his.. otherwise my whole tut is a waste of your time.desolder the 5 pins off the bottom usb memcard and snap off the memcard port
(IMG:http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/hsdemonz/tut/tabbreak.jpg)

now that you have the fatboy controller done it is time to do the old school controllers.
on the old controllers you may need to remove the old chip.. also removing the old wire pins is optional you can just snip them off. ok the fastest and best way to remove a chip is with a heatgun or a blow dryer..once the chip heats up enough you can easily pry it right off without damaging the solder pads
(IMG:http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/hsdemonz/tut/pry.jpg)
and if you choose to completely remove the old wire pins you can use a desoldering iron (my personal choice) or a desoldering braid. otherwise you can just snip the wires off
(IMG:http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/hsdemonz/tut/desoldering.jpg)

now on the rest of the tutorial all i am going to show you is the controller and its circuit board with the color wires that get soldered to each one.. light grey represents the bare ground wire.

an nes controller

Bump and if you could do this with a smaller 6 button sega saturn controller that would be really awesome of you.

thanks for the great tut,
where did you get your vga cord?
the ones i have lying around i cut up dont seem to have 14 wires,
Is it because they arent SVGA?
in any case i dont want to go out and buy a few, destroy them just to find the same problem.

the ones i got are 15 wires.. they are from bestbuy.. they are vga extension cables..if you have 14 wires just dont use the 5v wire... i dont use the 5v vga even though i installed it to the vga port... i have several turbo timer chip mods i made but dont have a controller that i can use them on
