Green...red...green...red...

My friend's Xbox is in need of help. He got it refurbished. It turns on but after a few seconds, the light starts to flash red and green and i get a screen saying i should contact costumer service, so i did, and they recomended i should just get a new xbox. Not being the one to give up too fast, i took it apart to see what the problem was. There was nothing wrong with it, only two screws belonging to holes which held the drive in place, so i put them back in. Then i spectulated that maybe the ATA cable was broken, so i replaced it. Then i put everything back in place and it worked, only once, but then after turning is off and on again, i got the problem. Any suggestions on what the problem would be?

It is most likely the hard drive dieing.  What is the error number in the top left hand corner of the screen at the error message?

yeah like the other guy said its probly ur hard drive.  but every once in while mine will give me the same message u have and im like wtf, but then i just restart it and it works fine after that.  u could try putting ur ear right above where the hard drive is and try to hear if anything is moving?  i dont know that much about the xbox or hardware modding but thats what i have tried in the past.

You probly got the 3944 old old v1.0 xbox kernel which doesnt give a number on error screen. Totally hard drive issue sounds like to myself. Time to get a new hard drive possibly modchip if you dont have an eeprom backup.

Probably a hard drive error.

However, if he's dropped it, or just any weirdness has occurred, it could be being caused by a trace in the motherboard. Whip out a magnifying glass and check the mobo out for any tears in the lines. You can find pictures of what a lifted trace looks like on google. BTW - If thats the case, unless he wants to undertake soldering you'll need a new Xbox.
