Just order the parts from Mouser, then get a perfboard and soldering iron from RadioShack.

Im not 100% positive, but I believe that mkF=(mu*)F=microfarad

I think the rest of the stuff is pretty self explanitory. I do not believe that a ton of people know about this procedure as it was never really publically posted anywhere, thats why you may not be getting a ton of feedback. I will probably be making one in a couple days, if anything turns up I'll post here.

I built one.

I didn't have any MAX232 chips, so I used a MAX235 instead (so I didn't need four of the five capacitors).

I couldn't get it to work.  It was a rush job so maybe I overlooked something, or I don't have direct access to the serial port in WinXP.  I put it aside and figured I'd look into it later.

I did notice that the schematic has pins 1,4,6 on the serial port tied together, while the link census007 provided has just 4,6 tied together.  I may isolate pin1 and see what happens.

I'd also be interested to hear if anyone here has any experience with this process.

P.S. you want 0.1uF capacitors.  Try these at Radio Shack.  smile.gif

Alright I got it to work.. STRG+Z means CTRL+Z another Problem was that my max232 was damaged.. I popped in another one and it was good to go.. Im seriously considering rewriting that tutorial in better english..

I used a female pin header from a Duox2 in wich the chip was quicksoldered so I had it leftover, To make it a 2x4 I pulled the extra pins out and dremmeled the plastic flat. I used an old dvd power cable for wire to connect the wires to the hard drive. The DB9 connection was made with a female jack and cable from radio shack as well.

Power was given from a 5v wall wart from an old linksys router rated for 5v @ 2.5a that I had laying around, and a power brick for a HDconnect (ps2)  my inital design was to pull 5v off of the hdconnect PSU but I wasnt sure on how stable itd be, My PCB version wich Im going to be building here shortly will have it set up that way with a switch on it to power on the hard drive when telnet needs it.
Here are some links to the parts I used

Ebay Link for Max232's

Capacitors

I couldnt believe how bootleg this was to get going but it indeed does work

If you cant get it going then I can make you one.. I have enough for 3 more smile.gif

Replacing the printscreens with ones from an English copy of Winblows would be helpful, I had a use Babelfish to double check a few Hyperterminal options

Im going to rewrite this for use with all radio shack parts except the max232 wich will need to be purchased from one of the major electronic sites.. The screenies and pics will all be redone as well and a little more detailed now that I have a finished working final product. I can unlock your drives census but shipping might not make it worth sending them.. Since I only build stuff for fun I was looking to get as many of these drives as I can for a local computer shop that builds systems for needy families, I posted a WTB in the BST's but I've had little luck.. so if anyones looking to get rid of any of them and sees this thread PM me biggrin.gif

Please rewrite this tutorial.  I'm planning on making one of these, the only thing holding me back is that the tut is very difficult to follow.  For those looking for the MAX232 chips, the company, Maxim give out free samples of them.  I just got 10 in the mail.  Maxim-ic.com is the company site.
