those with wd hard drives can try this to unlock them not sure if it works found it on another site.........

WDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWD

It MUST be in all capitals. I used the program ATAPWD. The commands are ERASE PREPARE, immediately followed by ERASE UNIT. It will not accept this password simply to unlock the drive. (Not if the drive was locked with the user password, as the XBox does) I successfully used this on a WD80EB, which is the standard XBox WD hard drive. Keep in mind, this will WIPE OUT all the data on the drive!! But, if you have a drive that is locked, and you don't care for the data on it, this is a way to make it useful again.

I did ERASE PREPARE, and after that ERASE UNIT but I got an error message with: timout busy. And now even atapwd wont recognize my harddrive anymore sad.gif

That's the exact page I ran across (about 4 months ago). This time I'm definitely gonna bookmark it. Thanx for digging it up, {later}. beerchug.gif

... and to think, that post has been there since Sept. of 2004.

Can this also be used to lock the HDD? I have a softmodded HDD but unlocked it by mistake and have no backup... I used the hotswap method... Using the same method can I lock my HDD using this master password?

Great Job! Works like a charm. I was wondering if you have to wait the full 30 minutes or if you can F5 sooner than that. I noticed the hard drive activity light never goes out even after 30 minutes. Just curious to the shortest amount of time one has to wait for drive to be unlocked\erased?

Works like a charm,This is what I did.

Did ERASE PREPARE,then ERASE UNIT,then after that it wont show your hard dive, just wait like 30 minutes to allow the hard drive to erase then hit F5,it will show your hard drive, then unlock it with the master password.

BUMP

I can confirm it works, successfully unlocked 2 stock drives from xboxes which had corrupt eeprom (hence harddrive key was gone).

In ATAPWD
- Erase Prepare
- Erase Unit, password as stated WDCWDC...  gives timeout message
- Press F5 every couple of minutes until the drive data shows up again (you must wait until the drive finishes erasing - do not power off)

Drive is now erased and unlocked.

I really need help,

Alright, here's my problem. I have a locked drive from a softmodded xbox I fried while putting in a modchip. So now I'm trying to unlock it, but of course I don't have the eeprom. I used the atapwd tha's on xboxhdm, and followed he directions to a "T"(prepare erase, followed by erase, password WDCWDC...). But I got Error: command rejected by drive.

I used Itools to mod it originaly but messed it up with the ulimate boot disk, incase any of that matters.

Nevermind I was reading somewhere else and they were talking about a softmodded hard drive that need to be unlocked and they told the guy to try "TEAMASSEMBLY". Well I did and I got my Busy time-out error. so I'm good. Thanks anyway cuz I know you could have helped me.

I have 6 of the WD80EB HD and when I run the ATAPWD it tells me "No ATA drives detected" I get this reply on every drive I try. I use a spare PC for stuff like this with the cables exposed for easy access. I have tried this on both the Primary and Secondary IDE cables any clue? and thanks in advance.

you can lock it, but it won't work on your xbox because the motherboard won't have the password you locked it with. It'll just boot up to error 06 (cannot unlock hdd).

cyd0g, you just made my week. I had three WD Caviar paperweights. 120, 160 and 200. They are all safely in an xbox now. You saved them from the cold drawer. I have never been so excited about a password...ever

Another password to try is as the master password is "XBOXSCENE".  I just used it and got the "Busy time-error", which means mine will unlock too.

Here is some history of how I locked it unintentionally.  I locked my drive (MDT 100 GB drive) somehow using the Dos tool  (option 4) from XBoxHDM 1.9 and the regular unlocking tools they have in option 3 (which boots to linux) of the XBoxHDM 1.9 would not unlock my drive. For those of you familiar with the command unlockhd -a, it usually will look on your XboxHdm disc and find the eeprom and unlock it automatically with no problem.  I had all the eeprom, hd password info and everything, but to no avail.  Finally, I got to this ATA Tools program and used the password above and it seemed to work. Try it... it may work for some of you too.

Having the same problem here... is there something we have to do with the jumpers before trying to get it to work with ATAPWD?

This WD80EB HD is fresh out of my xbox from years ago, any help getting the program to recognize the drive would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Plug the power into the HD and leave the IDE cable off until you get to the DOS screen. Plug in the IDE cable then type in ATAPWD.
