k heres a math problem.  i just read about this, and i thought it was cool.
its called the monty hall problem:

at some game show, a contestant is shown 3 identical doors by the host.  The host says, "Behind one of these doors is a nice car. behind the remaining two are goats." (the host knows which doors have what behind them).

then the host tells the contestant to pick a door (but not open it).  The contestant points to a door.  Then the host opens the remain that contains the goat.  (now theres 2 doors left. one with a goat, the other with the car.  The contestant is pointing to one of them.)
then the host says to the contestant, "you now have a choice. either you keep the door you are pointing to, or you can switch to the remaining door."

the contestant wants to win the car, obviously. so what should he/she do?  switch? not switch?  and why or why not??

this is math?  I don't know because it seems whenever I watched that show, he did that to everyone whether they had the right door or not.

If I were the contestant, I wouldn't switvh.. why?  because I feel it's best to go with my instincts.  I know it's not right, but thats just me.

Awww I heard this riddle in 8th grade from my math teacher.
He should keep it I believe because the probability of picking two goats in a row is smaller, but I'm not sure.

i think you have a better chance of winning the car if you switch.  since you're chances increase to 2/3 by switching doors.

CORRECT.

I still havent found a good mathematical solution to this. most of them involve Bayes law (is that spelt right?).  And i still dont understand why it ALWAYS works out to switching=2/3 chance of winning, and not switching=1/3 chance.
however, I've tried repetitions of this many times, and it ALWAYS works out that way... blink.gif

i always see it as a 50/50 chance either way, since at that moment, you have a choice of two, and only one is a winner....weird...

here's an old one:

A 20 foot ladder is attached to a yacht. Each step is 6 inches apart. If the water is rising 1 ft/hr. How long will it take for the ladder to be entirely submerged?

Unless the boat is sinking, it wont! blink.gif
