heres a riddle:

you're lost in a forest nearby a town you want to get to.  In the forest, you meet two guys standing at a fork in the path: one path leads to the town, the other leads to the "hole of death".  One of the guys always lies, the other always tells the truth, and they answer all questions asked.  (how do u know this? who cares. its a given).
you are allowed to ask one question ONLY to ONE of the two guys (why? who cares, its given again).  you must pick one and ask him ONLY.

What do you ask in order to determine the path that leads to the town?

ask one what gender they are.. if he says male then he tells the truth if he says female or something else than he's lying.

I could actually think of plenty of answers for this one, are you sure you said it right?

You ask your one and only question, and then what?  Randomly pick your way through?
I've heard this somewhere, so I won't say the answer.   But the riddle is pretty good.

This is the same scenario from the movie Labyrinth starring David Bowie.  The girl in the Labyrinth solves the riddle by asking one (guy 1)  of the "guys" the following question:  "If I asked the other guy (guy 2) if the path to the right is the correct path, would he tell me that it is?"

Here are possible scenarios based on guy 2's response:

1) "yes", guy 2 always tells truth - Invalid condition
2) "yes", guy 2 always tells lies - path on left
3) "no", guy 2 always tells truth - path on  right
4) "no" , guy 2 always tells lies - path on  right

Therefore if guy 2 says "yes", then take path on left.  If he says "no", then take path on right.

You're lost in the woods and all you have with you is a pack of matches and a knife.  You come across an abandon cabin.  Inside there's an oil lamp, wood stove, and gas lamp.  Which do you light first?

The match.

the answer to my original riddle is:

you ask any one of them "What would your friend say is the way to town?"

and then you go the other way.

A man was found murdered on Sunday morning. His wife immediately called the police. The police questioned the wife and staff and got these alibis:
The Wife said she was sleeping.
The Cook was cooking breakfast.
The Gardener was picking vegetables.
The Maid was getting the mail.
The Butler was cleaning the closet.

The police instantly arrested the murdered. Who did it and how did they know?
