Story of corn nuts
QUOTE
In the year 1936, in Oakland, California, a young entrepreneur named Albert Holloway decided to take advantage of the local taverns by creating a snack that would be the perfect accompaniment to a cold mug of beer. He called it Brown Jug Toasted Corn and sold it to the tavern owners to serve free to their patrons.
Holloway's hunch proved to be right, but it wasn't long before his successful business was forced to come to a standstill. A law was passed in California that prohibited tavern owners from giving away food.
Even in the face of adversity, Holloway continued his one-man operation, introducing the snack to schools and stores. He broadened the appeal of his unique product by changing the name to CornNuts, and soon his efforts began to pay off.
Then one morning, Holloway read about a breed of corn that was bigger than any in the world and grew exclusively in the far off mountainous region of Cuzco, Peru. Holloway could hardly wait to try toasting this world's-largest corn, and managed to get a sample sent from South America. He was exhilarated to find that the giant corn made a product that was even better than his regular corn, and he was sure it would create a sensation as a snack food. In the meantime, the toasted corn operation moved into a larger facility and Holloway hired employees to help him keep up with the expanding business.
In the late 50's, satisfied with two decades of success and a promising future for CornNuts, Holloway sold the business to his sons, Maurice and Rich. Not long after, an enthusiastic, young corn geneticist, Dr. Don Shaver, approached CornNuts and developed a Cuzco corn hybrid which could be grown in the U.S. CornNuts had its very own breed of giant corn!
Today, CornNuts is still using that giant corn to create a super-crunchy, delicious snack! CornNuts are available in eight flavors: Original, Ranch, Barbecue, Chile Picante con limon, Nacho Cheese, Sour Cream & Onion, Red Hot, and Taco. CornNuts are sold in a variety of sizes and in lots of different types of stores-from convenient stores to membership clubs to food stores. CornNuts are available across the nation and are still as unique and delicious as ever!
