If it's got more RAM slots, it's is no way in hell a 1.6.  The mobos were redesigned, and no extra ram slots were left on (the previous ones were DevKit leftovers).  You can add another 4 chips (2 on top, 2 on bottom) to a 1.0-1.5 mobo and, provided you do it correctly, you will have 128MB RAM.

hey thanks for the reply, i admit, i don't know much about modding xboxes but i know that i'm using X3 16Ver Bios on my box. i know that there's two chips on the top and then i found there were to places on the bottom to maybe put more i thought, now, what is mobo and DevKit's and i had an older version before and i switched it out with a friends it had four places on top including the two that had chips on them. i wanted to, then, expand, but due to upgrading my chip from x2 no solder, to x3 solder, i changed boxes with a "costomers" (shh, keep that on the down low, heh) but yeah i was dissapointed that i couldn't do the same till my friend, said, yeah you can, it's on the bottom. so i was like "oh yeah" but he's never done it before, and so i got my hands on some chips and now i'm gonna put them on, i just want to know also, if maybe i need the same version board, thinking a different version would conflict with the original chips. thanks for your help.

I would think that you could go as far with the ram as you want, but on the other hand it really depends on the programming oft he game, wheather they use ram recycling (making the dead bodies dissaper for instance) or they just get rid of all the cashe right away (if you drop a weapon, its gone)

now, you say "go as far with the ram that you want" i have to ask, how much further could i go? i mean these are only 32MB chips, where could i get the same style RAM chips with a ..um, bigger size*?* plus i'm not really concerned about the game play, i never thought about that, it'd be a bonus though.  i'm looking to see how far i can get this little box to go, as far as running software and even mulitple programs, i also heard about running windows 98 on it, as well as linux, but i know nothing about linux (unfourtunatly) so i'll settle with windows 98, and what i know about that is you need 128 or more to run anything other than win98 on it, so i'm gonna see what all i can do.  if anyone has any suggestions that would help me out, i'll gladly take 'em, heh. thanks guys.

"you are looking for 32 MB chips, those are 16 MB"

huh? i don't understand, are you telling me that the two chips on my mother board are only 16MBs then how do i have 64MB of memory?
i figured if i bought a board with the similar version number that those too would have two 32MB chips on it, and then i could just add them to the board, cross my fingers and hope it works.
i was wondering if anyone has bothered doing this, and if so, did it work or did it not, what was the result? is there anything else i should know?

oh, i see what you're saying.  well this is good, because i don't have any chips on the bottom of my board, the spots are, so to say, "empty". i just hope this board i ordered last week will have only 2 34MB chips. if not, and there are 4 16MB chips then i will order the ones you have.

You don't have chips on the bottom?

I'd like to see this.  I'm dead sure that MS didn't use 32MB chips on the 1.6.  No harm in checking, though.

Well, I took pictures of my 1.6 board.

Top and Bottom.
I apologise for my shitty photography skills.

See there are 2 ram chips on top, and 2 directly underneath on the bottom.

crap, i just recieved the board i bought off of ebay, it's got 4 chips on it the "416" the person sold for a $1 not bad, but he saidit won't power up, he's tried different power supplys on it. oh well, now i have to go home and take my xbox apart, then realize i'm a dumb-ass, the last board i had had two open spots on the top, and when i was talking to my friend we were both understanding that there were two open spots on the bottom, and we didn't bother taking the board off the case (too lazy to look for the torque driver). oh well as soon as i get home from work i'll look, and most likely be in the market for what i'm sure the chips are called "434" sorry, for the confusion, but i hope when i look at my board it'll have open spots on the bottom, but now looking at this one, i'm seriously doubting it, and thanks for the pics. not bad, mine would prolly come out the same, if not worse. but hey that's why i come here to ask, i only want to learn, i didn't mean to argue.

No problem.  I was wondering what was up with that.  Had me quite intrigued for a bit there.  Good luck with the new board  biggrin.gif

I seem to recall that there was a fake 128mb 1.6 on eBay, the seller claiming to have desoldered the 16mb chips and replacing them with 32mb ones, however, he claimed that the stock M$ bios would not boot, and you had to use a mod chip.  When asked about the reasoning, he quickly revised it and that was the end of that.
