Dvd Rom Drives Scratch Discs?

Ok i have 2 thomsons and a phillips dvd rom drive that seem to scratch every disc i put in them. The dvd rom drives have trouble reading discs and i think it's because they get scratched. Is there anyway to find out what it may be scratching them? I sure would love to fix these drives instead of buying new ones.
