Micro$oft Can't Make It's Own Graphics
« on: January 21, 2003, 08:21:00 AM »

This is funny, som graphic art made on Mac:

- The Windows 95 logo (created with FreeHand)
- IBM's Aptiva point-of-purchase materials and the boxes they come in
- Intel's "Flying Pentium" ads
- The graphics for Micro$oft Network (MSN)
- The newspaper and magazine ads for IBM,Gateway,Dell and Micro$oft
- Outdoor advertising for Micro$oft magazine
- Windows packaging
- PC magazine, PC World magazine, Windows Sources magazine, Computer Shoper magazine
- The weekly internal Micro$oft newsletter Micronews
- Many IBM and Micro$oft TV ads (edited with Mac-based Avid systems)

(from "Macworld Mac Secrets 6th Edition")

That's not very surprising when you consider the fact that MS outsources most, if not all, of their graphic design projects. So, no, MS doesn't make their own graphics. And what's the big deal, anyway? It's not like "OMFG! MS using Macs! Holy 5h17!". If my memory serves me correctly, MS *makes products for the Mac*. So what?

He's just trying to fight back because everybody else on this site hates Macs, and there was a little debate about it in another thread. Don't let it bother you though BenzineX. I hate them with a passion, but I don't give a crap if other people use them, I just never will.  We're not really attacking you, it's just that we're PC people. Remember that this is an Xbox forum, and the Xbox IS a PC. . .which helps put things in perspective. . . .

I'v never realy understood the whole hate thing against differnt OSs/Hardware, as far as I'm concerd it's a mater of taste and what you need your computer for.

Well as soon as I get a larger HD for my xbox I'm gonna run linux on a partion so BTW so then I guess I woun't feal so left out then wink.gif

Well, for now i hate macs. But this could change. For the longest time they wouldn't let anyone else write software for their computers. And they still won't let anyone else make hardware for it (pretty much). They are too damned expensive as well. And not any better (sometimes worse) in performance compared to a PC. So it's pointless to buy one right now.

Whoa, that's such BS! I guess they just don't know art when they see it. Heh, they also probably thought that Akira was "weird", assuming they've even seen it. Sucks for 'em.

what do you mean "wouldn't let anyone else write software for their computers"? In the last ten years that I've been using mac thier's been plenty of 3rd party mac software or am I misunderstanding you?

actualy there were mac clones for a while but it did a lot of damage to apple financialy so they canceld all thier licencing and I guess they've been scared of it ever since...

as for them being a bit steep in price I'll admit to that but IMHO you get what you pay for. And macs have at many times been known to outperform PCs.

The point of geting a mac is (amongst other) a little what I was trying to point out with this thread, that the computer graphics/layout bussines is dominated by mac (as well as to a lesser extent the music bussines).

And for all you mac-haters you HAVE to try Mac OSX (10.2) it has NEVER crashed on me and the only comercial program that's crashed more then once or twice is Internet Explorer (go figure)...also it FreeBSD based wich should intrege some of you (Unix commands in the terminal  smile.gif )

Sorry, but the only advantage that Apple has over PC is style, but now there are so many case mods for PCs that it doesn't count anymore. Translucent plastic! Woohoo!  rolleyes.gif

Yeah, "at many times" in the past.

Mm-hmm... it sure used to be that way, but many graphic design companies are switching to PC, because the price/performance ratio is much better for PC. And the only reason some companies aren't is because they're too used to using Mac, so they figure "Eh, why learn something new? I'll just pay a bunch more and use what I'm familiar with..." Besides, the number one use for Macs in the music industry is as a front-end to Protools.

Okay, now back to your regularly scheduled posting...

Not anymore, compadre. Computers with an AthlonXP processor in 'em have been known to outperform a Mac when it comes to graphical and audio manipulation and creation. Plus, they're cheaper.
Oh, yeah, I'd like to know why they charge money for an OS based on (admittingly, modified) FreeBSD. Doesn't it say in the licence for FreeBSD that all dirivatives must be freely distributed?

Apple does have the source code for the underlying FreeBSD software (Darwin) available for download on their website, but all the "pretty stuff" (read: proprietary software) is what you pay for when you buy MacOS.

Windows XP hasn't crashed for me since I got it (over a year ago).

And I'm contantly encoding MPEG2s and burning DVDs and such.
