QUOTE (Canuck77 @ Jan 9 2003, 04:28 PM)
Why do people need to make fun of things like Special Ed and children with Down's?

Honestly - are you people so small-minded that you can't see what little opportunity life has to offer people who are born with one of these conditions?

I seriously hope that when you are older (assuming any of you manage to crawl your way out of your parents' basements) you never have to look at a newborn baby who has been diagnosed with Down's Syndrome, and realize that the best they can ever hope for is far worse than anyone else would ever expect. Same with people in Special Ed.

 Piss on you.

Thank you for your input, but to be honest, this has nothing to do with Downs. I have a child in IEP (special education) because he has ADHD (though now it's merely ADD). He spent two years catching up to his current classmates because the doctor went through everything (Prozac, Chlonidine, etc.) before finally putting him on Ritilan. He's ALWAYS tested through the roof on IQ tests, but his inability to concentrate made it difficult for him to learn.

So your assumption that Special Ed is for dummies is a bit prejudicial on your part.

Secondly, is the Crank Yankers character "Special Ed" a victim of Downs? Why do you make that assumption? He's just a moronic CHARACTER on TV. Nobody - NOBODY - has ever called him retarded or a victim of Downs (BTW: I have a nephew who has Downs - a bright and inquisative 3 year old, no less).

The people we make fun of in this thread will not be vicitims of Downs, or mentally retarded people.... they'll just be morons who either are too lazy to think or too inconsiderate to give anybody else consideration. They are worthy targets of derision.

So jump off that high horse, pal, because we aren't the ones pissing in your corn flakes, ok?

QUOTE (Canuck77 @ Jan 9 2003, 05:09 PM)
THEY are worthy targets, but people in Special Ed (*or* people with Down's) are not.

How about something like "The Moron Awards", or something along those lines?

If you've truly got a kid in Special Ed, you know damned well that he takes a whole shitload of abuse from his friends for it - and that it doesn't do him any service to be saying what you're saying.

There's been TONS of this kind of stuff on this board - from that "Generation Matrix" thing, to that "Shut The Fuck Up Award" (with the Down's kid crossing the finish line at a Special Olympic event)... and it was one too many.

The fact that you consider it a high horse at all is sad, really - it implies that you wouldn't expect most people to be beneath making fun of Special Ed, Down's, or whatever.

My point is this: If you called it the "Polock Awards", you should get flamed, because equating annoying, uninformed people to Polish people isn't right. As you so rightly say, why is it alright to equate it to people in Special Ed?

...and you HAVE a kid in Special Ed?!

First off, nobody makes fun of my son.... he's actually pretty popular at school, and he's very helpful and considerate of those less fortunate than him in his classes.

...and I must REPEAT, the award is named after a TV CHARACTER, not "Special Education" Why is this point so difficult for you to grasp?

lastly, I am of Polish descent (I also have Native American blood running through my veins) and to be honest, the term "Pollock" holds no negative connotations for me or my family. Who honestly believes Polish people are stupid? It only offends people who are actually insecure enough to be bothered by such jokes.

Get a grip.

Why don't you go bother Retarded Monkey with this silly crusade of yours?

One of my best friends in Highschool had a "down's" brother. He was a cool guy and fun to hang around with. It is truely a heartbreaking disease.

On another note. I am Christian.....People cuss and take Christs name in vain often here and make fun of Christians (sometimes). I don't get all hissy about it. It is their prospective on life and Im not here to tell people how to live theirs. I live my life by example (not always the best, but oh well).

Moral of the story. If people make fun of disability's or religion or anything, don't let it get to you. Second of all, don't be overly sensative about subjects like that. It doesn't do anyone any good.

Note to BJ, I am not in anyways saying you were making fun of anything....just stating this for Canuck who (not trying to be rude) seemed overly sensative about the subject.

It is ok to laugh about your weaknesses sometimes you know.

QUOTE (Canuck77 @ Jan 10 2003, 09:05 AM)
*Sigh*...

It doesn't matter to me whether or not anyone makes fun of your son. I'd point out, instead, that while nobody in his Special Ed class makes fun of him, people in a 'regular' school was.

My POINT, anyway, is not that anyone was directly making fun of people with a disability. BUT, by saying that a regular person is LIKE a person with a disability, you're implying that the 'normal' person is somehow superior to the person with a disability, therefore diminishing the value of the person with the disability.

It's not a hard concept to grasp, really. It's also why "Special Ed" isn't funny as a character - so my criticism stands, whether you were basing it off of a character on TV, your son, or someone else.

Ahh - see there? Think about an "ADHD Award" (or ADD Award), where someone posted a picture of your son. Anyone who acted like an ass was given it. Why isn't that funny? It's the same thing. It's not funny because it diminishes the importance of your son. Your son IS not a disability, but he HAS that disability. By mocking someone, SAYING they have that disability, you lower that person below a 'normal' level, and lump your son in there with him.

As far as being sensitive about it, you're right. Probably too much so, especially for a forum of this type - nobody wants to talk about that sort of thing. What would be the POINT of arguing with Retard Monkey about that? Or (whoever the hell it was who originally came up with that Generation Matrix thing, and Biosboy who copied it). There's simply a lower standard of acceptance with people like that. Some people will go through their entire lives unable to grasp the idea that they're doing something that hurts other people, and you just can't reach them.

But, if you want, someone PM him and tell him to look at the posting. I'm sure he'd have witty, insightful comments that defend him admirably. Tell you what, BenJeremy- consider it a compliment that I consider you intelligent enough to call you out on what you said. I respect most of what you do on the forum, I think you're probably a good guy in person. I just called you out on this, that's all. I wouldn't have called other people out (as mentioned above) because it would be a waste of time.

Cheerio's comment is what I'm talking about, in particular. To take another example, would you give a "wheelchair award" to someone who ended up crippled because of their own carelessness or stupidity? (Say someone who fell asleep at the wheel or tried some daredevil ski trick or something). Of COURSE not - because it's not funny. Or hell - even someone who got drunk, drove, hit a pole and ended up crippled. Would anyone even consider a "cripple award"? The difference is that society has actually bothered to tell kids that it's not nice to make fun of someone with a PHYSICAL disability - but mental and emotional disabilities (and you can go down the list, here - psychosis, schitzophrenia, you name it, it's funny as hell) are fair game.

You didn't read my part about not caring what other people think did you. Or the part of being overly sensative.

smile.gif Someday we will all look back on everything we have done that is stupid or mean and we will feel bad. None the less, no you haven't made any enemies so far or anything.

on a side note. Have you guys ever thought that maybe you yourself had "downs"? I have thought about it. How would you know? Everyone around you isn't gonna be like hey stupid you have downs, or anything like that. LOL ok maybe not.

But here think about this. is the color blue that I see, when I see blue the same color that you see. I mean if every time you see what you think is blue you are seeing the color that I see as brown how would you know? what if everyones color perception is different like that?

Ok my brain is going crazy
