First Car Run Around Ideas?
« Reply #45 on: September 09, 2008, 03:57:00 PM »

Thought I would reply on this thread again, I've been rethinking a lot, I think I'm going to go for a 1990-1995 VOLKSWAGON POLO 1.0 CL 3 DOOR HATCHBACK RED. It's about £700

http://cgi.ebay.co.u...bayphotohosting

I won't be buying of Ebay but when I pass my test I might get something like that, insurance is almost around £700 a year, I have nearly £2000 in my savings bank so I can pay insurance straight of in the first year biggrin.gif. It looks a pretty cool car. Although I want a new car to start with I think I will learn so much more and I can say I driven a car without power steering and ABS laugh.gif.

I just need to find one that isn't really a wreck to be honest, or I'm looking at the equivalent year of a Ford Fiesta. It's going to be way to long to save up £6000 so I might as well just get a 90's car.

Yeah, you really will become a much better driver if you do without the computer systems controlling the car. My VW Thing lacks power steering and ABS (and traction control, and stability management, and a bunch of other useless crap), and has drum brakes. Takes a bit to get used to braking earlier and accelerating slower, but once you get used to it, you will feel a lot more "in tune" with the car. Driving mom's Accord is just plain weird now. I am used to the softer brake pedal, stiff steering, and lack of acceleration response. The Accord has touchy brakes, really easy steering, and a touch of hesitance on the gas, but not much.

I think getting used to driving without any handicaps really helps your ability. I pay attention to the road more in my VW, whereas the Accord drives almost lazily, and makes me lose concentration.

ride a bike if you are worried about all those "handicaps"

honestly do you need all of them? no.

Nothing wrong with power steering and abs, because now matter how careful and in touch with your car you have no idea what someone else is doing in theirs where you would need to stop quickly or turn out of the way.

smile.gif I found a lil secret/loophole what ever you want to call it I got my insurance quote down on that ebay link car from £760 a year to £637 a year fully comp by simply adding my mum as a named driver (and I'm the policy holder). I'm rather happy about that I could pay it straight away. I'm going to book my test around early december hope I pass, I think it's time to start buying the local paper to look for some cars around the similar spec so I can get driving when I pass smile.gif..

It is not that I am worried about them, I just like driving without them. Personal opinion, I didn't mean to say they make people bad drivers or anything, or that I won't drive cars with those things.  smile.gif

Good luck on your test, Bucko. Make sure to stay calm during the test, that will help a lot.

You're doing it wrong...

It's not supposed to make you loose concentration - that's your fault. Those aids are supposed to assist in split second decisions where people's lives are on the line.  Even though you may "feel better" drive the VW it's really more of a danger to you and the other people on the road.

No offence really, just info!  biggrin.gif

And bucko, you're making a mountain out of a mole hill.  Stay off the autobahn, pop on some shades, take a deep breath  and you'll be fine.  smile.gif

well test is booked for early december biggrin.gif not saying exact date because I want to treat it like a normal lesson and not get to nervous about it. Least now I can start having 1 hour and 30min lessons a week then go on to 2 hour lessons a week. I've had 22 lessons now and I've not stalled it in the last 2 weeks so I'm starting to feel good about my general driving and everything.

I just can't wait till I buy a car if I pass!!!

I've been using Tesco Comparison site it's pretty good like I said if i add my parents it will be illegal since it's my car and i'm the only driver so i have to be the main policy holder.

ADD your mum as a second driver to YOUR policy. It's not illegal in any way, shape or form, i do it, my mates do it, LOTS of people do it and 9 times out of 10 it will knock a few hundered quid off your price.

ahem.

A 1998 FORD FIESTA 1.3 Encore registers around £700 a year insurance and the car goes for about £800. I'm seriously considering the Encore, has anyone had any issues with them.

My test is coming up very soon, early next month not far away at all. I really want a car before/soon after I pass.

That is the type of car (that is just a random image). Are parts cheap for them, we had a fiesta G reg years ago and it never had anything major with it.

my sister has one just like that (except in a horrible maroon colour). Parts are cheap and they are quite reliable wee motors.

They are the kind of cars that are so popular that every scrappy in the land will have anything you need for them, even full engines.

Yeah, agreed.

Personally i'd go for the MK5 instead of the MK4, same back end but a much nicer front end.

I also wouldn't go for the basic model, i'd get one with some nicer features, you'll really be pleased you did if you do. When your first thinking of getting a car, almost any seems a good idea at the time, but trust me, you'll be much happier in the long run if you spend just a little extra.

You can still get the MK5 with a small engine, bit newer car so less likely to go wrong, or have serious issues.

Same for the MK5, tons of parts around for these, they are hardly an expensive car either, in particular now this 'credit crunch' has took car prices down some.

Best of luck with your test on the day, just relax about it and think of it as any other lesson.
