M$ Dash Official Rescue Discs
« on: December 13, 2005, 11:55:00 AM »

So I rented King Arthur on DVD a few days ago, and put it in my Xbox to play the Xbox demo. Well lo and behold, it overwrote my xboxdash.xbe with an updated version. Since this is an official disc that can be booted in any xbox, this would be a good "rescue" disc for those that have softmodded their xboxes and accidentally deleted their dash and stuff. So if anybody could help and add to this list, that would be nice. Any games, movies, or anything else that you know of that will automatically update the dash and fix any dash problems will work. I'll start the list.

King Arthur the Movie (Xbox demo on disc)

Nice find, but one problem; would one be able to restore xboxdash.xbe if it in itself got corrupted/destroyed/obliterated/vaporized?

Care to test?

Already tested it out. My modchip is set to run evoxdash.xbe, so that's my main one. And I already had UIX installed as xboxdash.xbe (never use it), and when I ran the King Arthur demo, it overwrote this. So it will definitely override ANYTHING that is named xboxdash.xbe. So this will work for anybody that has accidentally renamed, deleted, formatted, etc. I get a few PMs or IMs a week asking how to restore the original xbox dash when this has happend, so this is hopefully a surefree fix.

I was thinking along the lines of someone with a softmod who has acidentally killed their xboxdash.xbe so it is unbootable, but is still able to load games.  I'm thinking they can't run DVDs as they have no MS Dash, right?  Or does it autolaunch the game XBE?

It autolaunches the updater without having the original MS Dash. It's a dual format disc, with the movie in UDF and the Xbox data in xdvdfs. Basically, the way I see it working is that it does a checksum against your current xboxdash.xbe if there is one, then if it matches, it runs the game. If it doesn't check, then it copies it's version over. I haven't checked if it will install the dash if there is no xboxdash.xbe, I'll check this out in a moment.

EDIT: Just deleted my xboxdash.xbe, and it'll reinstall it. I'm thinking this is a surefire way for fixing a failed softmod, unless the person did something completely foolish like formatting the whole HDD, or unlocking it, then locking it to a different EEPROM. Hopefully if we can get a good list going, anybody with a whacked out softmod can go down to the rental store and pick up a game, movie, etc. and try it out.

Oh, and I just remembered that the Chronicles of Riddick DVD has the Escape from Butcher Bay demo. I don't have the movie, so I can't check it, but I'm pretty sure it'll work too.

Star Wars Trilogy Disc 4 (special features)
Robots

another interesting note, i think at least one of those has no media check, meaning the files can theoretically be ripped and burned on a cd-rw and used to repair dashboards on unmodded xboxes, im gonna have to get a hold of one of these and try it out (coudl be my excuse to pick up the star wars trilogy dvds, lol)

Wow LordVader, thanks for that great tip on non-media check progs. Yes, I will definitely make an attempt at burning these files to a different media and see if the MS Dash will boot to it. Unfortunately, I have a Thomson drive, so only DVD-Rs work I think. I never use em, so I can't remember which type I need. But thanks for the input.

EDIT: No luck in testing my drive for stock BIOS and non-media check files. Can't seem to get my Xbox to run off the stock BIOS. Oh well,  no worries. Someone else can test it out.

anybody else have discs working?

found my copy of Hulk, has xbox files on it as well, tested on cd-r and no go

however, i have heard from a few people that dvd-r backups of Hulk do allow the demo to be played, its possible the demo is signed to all dvd media, i am running low on dvd-rs at the moment so i dont want to test (ill be restocking next week, so if no one has tried by then ill give it a go)

Hey Slingshot,

I have my buddies xbox that is softmodded with waffletool sc mod.  He did something???? now it just freezes at the xbox logo on boot.  Tried my evox rescue disk and retail game disks but still freezes.  Do you think this might help or do i have to hotswap the hd.  I have a full c drive/eprom back up.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks Don

if you have the prom theres no need to hotswap, just burn a copy of xhdm with the eeprom and C backup, then load the HD in the computer and go from there, dont hotswap, you can unlock the drive with the eeprom

This should deffinately be PINNED.
It helps GREATLY and saves time and money!

barton00 Glad this helped you out. I'm hoping that it'll help everybody else that choose softmods and accidentally whack it. I'm hoping that we'll be able to get a good list of movies or demo discs or something that just about anybody would have or would be able to walk down to the rental store and get it.

one thing to make sure though, is that you get disc 2, the xbox files are pretty much always on the special features disc, not the movie disc

True, I suppose it would help when posting a movie to put up what disc you are using. I know that the King Arthur demo is on the actual movie disc (only disc). Anyone know if any of the LOTR movies came with demos? I have both versions (Original and Extended), so I could check it, but I'm supposed to be writing a paper, so I don't really have time to test it out.
