Favorite Car Movies
« on: November 11, 2006, 08:00:00 PM »

A post by Jesterrace777 reminded me of an old movie.  I thought I would post a few of my favorite movies that had cool cars in it or good racing etc.  Here are a few, add your faves to the list.

Two Lane Blacktop
Dirty Mary Crazy Larry
Bullitt
American Grafitti
The Wraith the one Jesterrace777 reminded me of.
Days Of Thunder

The original is way better than the second. It's got a 50+ minute car chase. The budget was low, so Halicki (The director, producer, actor, stunt driver) did the only logical thing, cast stunt drivers, family, and friends as all the actors. He needed to save money for cars. Many of the cars damaged in the movie were not his cars, merely ones that belonged to the public and were hit while filming. Most of the acting is horrible. There was no script, merely an outline. But the cars scenes are great. And that Mustang fastback, ("Elanor" in this version), took hit after hit after hit, and to this day runs. Watch it. Youll get 15 minutes into the chase scene and think, "This has got to be almost over", and it's just beginning. If you love car chases it's brilliant. As much because there's no special effects. It's staged, (To some degree), but still all real collisions, real fires, real bent metal.

The acting IMHO was better in the second one but the action and the story line was FAR BETTER in the 1974 original.  I have both of them.  Probably my favorite scene in the original was when they try to steal the Mach 1 from that insurance guy and then returns the car just so that the drunken lawyer takes the fall for being a drunken lunatic.   biggrin.gif

Anyways in no particular order:

The Wraith
Both of the Gone in 60 seconds movies
The Dukes of Hazzard (strictly for watching a finally tuned '69 charger with a Hemi tear up the road)
The Duel
Cannon Ball Run I+II
Speed Zone
Hollywood Knights (one hilarious movie to boot)
Cobra (The Custom 1950 Mercury that he drove was just a cool looking car)
Mad Max/The Road Warrior
The Blues Brothers (Gave me a new appreciation for those decommisioned squad cars that run around)
The Italian Job (both the original and the re-make)
The Bond Movies

And I will have to be the first to commit the cardinal sin:

The Fast And The Furious.  Yes, the story line and acting sucked arse.  Yeah, they were pretty clueless as far as cars go.  For me it was more the concept than anything else.  Taking an import car and modifying it so that it can outperform (yes, with an emphasis on performance) the supercars (ie Ferrari) was just something I had never really thought of until I saw the movie.  The scene where the Supra destroys the Ferrari was a pretty powerful statement and the finely tuned Charger was fun to watch as well.  Bottom line, I went to see the movie to see a bunch of nifty cars (or at least the concept there-of).  The second one had a story line that was more entertaining but it fell far short in the car department (outside of the opening race scene).

Incidentally this is an interesting list of movies.  Of course it is 100% biased towards muscle car enthusiasts but it is still a good list none-the-less.

The ending is pretty sweet too. But why ruin the ending on such a classic movie ?   wink.gif

Oh absolutely, I didn't want to give it away so I stuck with the scene that I listed above.

Gone in 60 Seceonds
The Fast and Furious
2 Fast 2 Furious

I like my car to look good and sound good before having the speed. I like the cat-back exhaust sound, but when I see kids who just go out buy the mufflers and put them on stock exhaust; it bugs the hell out of me. Go get a full exhaust. Also, when I see kids who drive around primer colored and non matching body parts, this bugs me to. If you are going to start something finish it. If you dont have the cash to do it, then dont do it at all.

That has to be my biggest pet peeve.  Right up there with the numbnuts who have a decent paintjob but then decide to do the patches of primer grey with the rough texture to it (or do the whole car that way).  What the hell?  It's like they are going out of their way to make it look like thier car has been in an accident and had a botched repair job/re-paint.  Nothing cool looking about that.

The remake I saw first and it was also good, but Orig, is the best.

Blues brothers is prob my fav movie period but the chases in it are great.
