Okay, I want to get some new tires and rims for my ricer. Its a '95 Civic and is lowered with Eibach's Pro Kit springs. Anyone think I would have clearance issues with 17" rims mounted with 205/40's? I'm really considering dropping down to 15's but I'm not sure about how they will look. Really its just the website I am going to buy from has a better selection for 17's, the selection for 15's and 16's blow.

Please tell me that you have some performance mods on that thing and no a fart cannon muffler and body kit doesn't count.   Anyways, if it lowers the height of the civic at all you will have clearance issues.  I don't see why in the hell anyone lowrides their cars.  Nothing more hilarious than watching a lowrider get stuck on a 5" tall speed bump.

Depends on how much you lower the vehicle, if you dont go to radical it can improve handling simply by lowering the center of gravity (though, go to much and you not only sacrifice ride a lot, but you through all the stock geometry of the suspension out of whack, and end up making it worse). I'm looking to lower my Impala maybe 1.5 inches at the most, that little bit, with all the weight of that car should make it handle a bit better. But its still no super car.

Heh, speaking of slammed cars, my freind (keep in mind, 3rd party information here, take it with a grain of salt) came out of Target one day to see a low rider, hydraulics and all, stuck on a speed bump, dumb ass apparently tried to 'bounce' over the bump, ended up cracking/bending the frame when he bottomed out  laugh.gif

Anyways, don't buy off line, go to a local wheel shop, a good one should have no problem mounting a few different sized rims on the car (albeit tireless most likely) just to get a feel for the size and fit of them. If they wont even do that then I wouldn't recommend shopping there...

I don't see why everyone gets their panties in a twist when someone wants to spend their money on cosmetics rather than performance. I mean you'll still beat them in a race, and you'll still point and laugh... let them do it.... its almost shocking everytime i see a response like that... i think "why do they even care so much."

Remember: Ricers are silly... but so are the people who create them. I mean thats why they exist in the first place... am i right?

Nailed it. When I had my Probe I bought rims online that I knew would fit according to people online. But to get decent tires I went to the local shop, they ordered in 7 or 8 different tires in different sizes and test fit several until we figured out exactly what I wanted. If youre near a pseudo city or better, Ill bet theres a place with a far bigger selection of stuff in stock than I have around here. So it shouldn't be an issue to get a few things test fit. Honestly, if they can't spend 30 minutes trying a few rims on your car they really dont deserve what's gonna end up being a 500 buck or more sale. What style of rim are you looking at anyway? Just curious.

Well right now I'm looking at wheelsnext.com. They have reasonable prices plus they come with free install kits, springs, mounting and balancing, and free fedex shipping as well. Now I'm not sure about silver or gunmetal colored rims because right now my car is red. At this point I'm only looking at black ones and the only style I'm looking into is the 5 or 6 spoke(to the haters: its not because thats what every other ricer has, I just don't like all those dumbass extravagant 20's that people put on trucks and suvs)  Right now I think its lowered about 1.4" with no plans on going any lower.

I'm with you on that, nothing worse than seeing a car thats actually higher than stock just because of the wheels.

I cant speak for everyone else, but I know my irritation with the 'ricer' crowd doesn't come from people who want more cosmetic than performance, theres nothing wrong with that, hell my car is more show than go. What irritates the crap out of ME, honestly, are kids that throw primered body kits, carbon fiber (or even worse, the faux [sp] CF) wings, and a coffee can/fart can muffler on their cars, then act like they drive an Enzo Ferrari or Supra right out of The Fast and Furious, THATS irritating. You want cosmetics? Go for it, just remember what kind of car you drive, its not a supercar till you make it one.

Thats just me though

^^^Agreed. Anyone think 15's with 195/50's would look bad? I don't want to ride around with tiny looking wheels.

You need a set of these:

IPB Image

Sorry, couldn't help my self.  biggrin.gif  Damn rims are taller than my tires are...

Any way. As was started, I’d do your shopping locally. Ya its going to cost you a little more, but you will be happier. This way the shop can test what rims and tires won’t rub when you turn. I ran into rubbing problem  when I decided I wanted to install 285/75/17s on my Jeep. Even with a lift kit, the tires were to tall and would bottom out when I would be out on the trailer. So I downgraded to 265/75/17s and my rubbing issues were gone.

The local shop was more than happy to swap out the tires for me as their has less than 20 miles on them. No online shop could help you like that. And if they could, you’d be sitting twiddling your thumbs waiting on the shippers.

Just my  2¢

you might have some clearence problems with 17".  go to a rim/tire shop and have them put a rim with tire on the front and one on the back. sometimes you can bend the fender lip up to give you more clearence width wise.

LOL, yeah those rims oughta fit. Those must be for that gigantic new Ford XUV thing. Anyways, I have looked around locally and they are way too expensive. Tire prices alone are unreasonable. $599 for new rims, new tires(decent set I suppose), free mounting and balancing, free install kit(valve stems, lugs, lug key, all chrome),  free zenn springs, and free shipping. Can't forget about free 1-time rim repair. I just don't think it gets any better.

I'm actually using 17" Exel Ennios wrapped in 205/40 Kumho Ectsa SPT's.  I'm dropped a little over 2".

They should fit fine.  My advice based on my situation:

Although my rims are pretty, they're also pretty damn heavy.  If you plan on doing any racing, get lightweight 16" rims...or do what I did and get a lightweight set of stock alloys (with drag radials) smile.gif

I could have fit 205/45 easily, and maybe even 215/40 without much problem.  They would have filled the fender gap a little better, and still wouldn't rub much.  I didn't get them because 205/40 was about half the price.  It's up to you.

Ok, I'm not trying to 'harp' on you or anything, so I'll just say this one more time because I do think its important:
You are talking about the only thing that is in contact with the ground between said ground and your car. Just make sure its a reputable site. If you go to a place to have it done its generally worth the money, you see the rims in person, you know exactly what you're getting, and you get to speak to a person face to face. I'm just saying, if its a difference of 30-40 bucks, go local. But again, I'm not trying to nag on you, just make sure its a reputable site and what not.

Anyways, thats all I'll say on the subject, I'm just repeating myself at this point, let us know what you get and post up some pics!

Granulated does bring up a good point, keep in mind a larger and heavier rim than stock will not only rob power but also kill braking (depending on how heavier it is, you may not notice it).

I paid like $600 something shipped for the rims brand new and $200 something shipped for the tires brand new.

All the fucking local shops wanted $1200+ for rims with no-name, shitty all-season tires.  Uhh....no.

Wheelmax.com
tirerack.com

ftw.

not really about the the rim size but if you live where it snows save your stock rims and tires. when the cold season roles around slap the stock rims and tires back on. the salt the city puts down for ice and such will "eat" most aftermarket rims.
