New To Subs, Need Some Help
« on: July 27, 2006, 12:45:00 PM »

im planning to get some subs for my new celica but i have a couple of questions

1.if an mono amp is 500w rms, and i have 2 speakers are wired in parrallel, how much power will each speaker receive? i.e. will each get half/250w, or will they both drive 500w

2. what about if the speakers are wired in series?

thanks in advance

if the amp is rated for say 4 ohm speakers, you can put two 8 ohm speakers in parallel and each one will get half the power (the resistance divides to form the equivilant of one 4 ohm speaker). Similarly, you could put two 2 ohm subs in series, they will add to 4 ohms, and each will also get half the power.

so how does this look for a sub setup?
-2 pioneer TS-W306C 4 ohm subs rated 1000 peak 400rms
-1 Kenwood KAC-9102D mono amp rated 1700 peak 850 rms at 2 ohms
-1 Boss 1 farad cap

wire the speakers in parrallel for a 2 ohm load, then according to the guide granulated posted, each speaker would receive half the rms from the kenwood, which would be 425w. so as long as i dont turn it up all the way, i should be good, right? what do you guys think?

also in this picture
IPB Image
there are two speaker connections, how would i wire the speakers to these? should i assume that internally the two posts are wired in parrallel?

thanks for all the help guys

It should be fine.  Things tend to get tricky when you exceed the RMS, but alot of it depends on such things as the THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) rating on amp.  If you run a very clean amp (very low THD rating) then you can usually go well over the RMS of the subs (provided the subs are well made as well).

i installed one of those very same amps in a mates car the other day. Dont you think its silly how the crossover controls are under tatn panel held down with those 4 screws?

And the remote bass boost looked cheap. Hows it sound, i didnt really get a chance to test it fully.
