I don't suggest getting anything under 900cc, 600's are good to learn on but every one of my friends soon wants something with more power. I'm personally partial to Yamaha's so the R1 would be my advice biggrin.gif Maybe find one a few years old. The new ones are a bit pricey, but I have yet to hear any huge negatives for the R1 (minding the price) Good hunting.

umm 600cc is plenty of bike, I have a 440 that I paid practically nothing for, and it does highway speeds just fine.

I agree. 900 CCs is a lot of bike. I think it'd be to a point where it's dangerous for a novice rider.

I would recomend maybe you look a little older for your first bike.
I paid $400 for a 78 kz-400 with 5k miles on it and it work's great I ride it to work
every day and it goes highway speed's with eaze.
If you want more power I got my kz-1000 for $1200 and it's insanly fast.

Plus not to stab at rocket's but I find that lying on a gas tank just is not fun for more than
1 hour at a crack.

If your set on a rocket I'd go ninja I had a 600 and it was fun.

Look into the Suzuki Bandit 600 - it's not a crotch rocket but it's not a "standard" bike either.  Kind of a cross between the two, a sportbike with a more upright riding position.

I have a Bandit 1200S and I love it - I commute 60 miles each way to work every day.

If you're near central North Carolina, I have a 1981 Yamaha Seca XJ550 for sale...  another "standard" which is fun to ride.

Here's a GREAT guide for anybody looking for a first bike:
Used Motorcycle Evaluation Guide

And a good source for new protective gear at great prices:

I rode my uncles Ninja ZX-11 (to get a feel for wether I wanted a Harley type bike or a Crotch Rocket) and it was SCARY if I got on the throttle, that thing had a WICKED power band. I'd want no bigger than a 600, though a late model GSX-R is looking nice... And those mostly come in the 900 range...

A guy at the last job I worked at had a Bandit, it was pretty damn sporty but not wicked fast either. He was a great rider also, I've seen his little 600 smoke Busa's and GSX-R's all day long.

My buddy just picked up a 05 GSXR 750. And he sold his 01 600 for 3900. Not too shabby.

Hmm, I'll have to keep an eye out.. most of the ones I've seen around Colorado in the dealerships and online have all been in like the 900 area...

Forgot to mention, please be careful. Bikes are nothing to underestimate even if you're a experienced rider. My friend is 45 yrs old(riding for 25) and look what happened.

Sorry for the double post, but this needed to be said. I seen too many ppl get hurt and/or die riding.
I might sound like an uncle tom, but I push my bike when road conditions allow it. Better yet keep it off the streets, and go to track day. Get your speed fix there, and leave the road for cruising.

PS. Almost forgot, I also have a worked 03 R6 for sale. $5700 for that one.(power commander, gpr, hid, many others)
