stereo standpoint they blow goats.. but seeing as how i'm an installer that's one of the first things that pop to mind when looking at cars. laugh.gif

anyways, i personally find them kinda blehh.. i'd much rather go a few more years back and go for mid 70's. a lot cooler in my opinion.. specially if you snag up an old stepside, those are hot.

Assume Im looking for a tank more then any style. Stereo does not matter, so long as I can put a CD player in. (Which I obviously can) Cheap parts. Big engine. Im not debating aethetics, but I merely want a truck to throw shit in the back of and drive in the winter. Thats not a complete underpowered POS like my Nissan. Plus Im fairly convinced I could find a Chevy for less then itd take to fix my Nissan properly.

mid 70's chevy = tank .... late 80's/early 90's = blehh

also, the older truck is a "true" 350.. unlike the newer one that's bogged down with extra emissions-friendly garbage. the older ones are also a hell of a lot easier to work on... you can hop in the bay and sit on the wheelwell while you're tinkering around

also, the older one is carbed, not fuel injected like the newer one so you don't have to worry about computer issues.

The 350s gotten more and more powerful as EFI stuff has been added. Im not too concerned about a carbed 350 that's got less hp and gets worse gas mileage. Also I have found a dirt cheap Chevy 350. Ill be looking at it this week hopefully. All things considered, MAYBE Ill buy it.

ahhh.. gotcha.

see, i have a hard time keeping anything stock for too long.. for that reason i'd much rather have an older 350 so i can swap out manifolds, carbs, etc.. let's just say i should buy stock in edelbrock, as they get a fair amount of change from me.. laugh.gif

i guess when it comes to domestics i'm just an old school kinda guy.. but hey, a good deal is a good deal. is the truck standard cab or extended? long box or short?

I'd say whatever you get just make sure it's a 4x4, RWD pickups blow in the winter, they've got horrid ground clearance and 0 weight over the tires... I suppose you could throw a jersey barrier back there or something but then your hauling around useless weight all the time.

Auto or Stick doesn't matter much either. I prefer stick myself but when I was looking for a pickup it honestly didn't weight in my buying decision at all. Autos can take a whole lot more abuse, but depending on how it's setup you can loose power and fuel economy through an auto tranny, they also weight more (could be a good or bad thing depending on what you're using it for).

I'm partial to Toyota for obvious reasons, I have more faith in the reliability of an old Toyota over an old chevy or ford. Power is a big issue with most Japanese pickups though. The only problem I have with the Toyotas is older Toyota Pickups blow the head gasket after about 100K miles. I took me 8 months of looking at old toyota pickups to find a decent one WITHOUT a blown head gasket. Thankfully it was also a V6 so it had plenty of power. Most older Japanese pickups have I4s... which suck for power.

... you could always do an engine swap. I'm sure you could fit a small block in your Nissan. or maybe import an S13 front clip for a couple grand and swap it out with an SR20DET, I hear they drop right in  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Ill take a Chevy 350s reliability over the rust issues toyotas and nissans have. If I wanted rust Id keep my truck. In the early 90s the 5 speed was way weaker then the ATX. The 700r4 is a much tougher tranny then the T5. Now once the T56 was released it became a different story. But a truck doesnt need a 6 speed. Plus my v6 nissan may as well be powered by Eunuchs. Its the least powerful truck iver ever driven.

And here's the deal on what I've found
89 Scottsdale
4x4
Auto
both engine and tranny have been swapped. (94 EFI 350)
Chassis has 220k (Ive seen em go a LOT more)
engine and tranny (Who knows)
But if its solid and runs solid its worth a grand to tool around in for a year or 2.

I dont want an extended cab. I need a winter vehicle. Not a taxi service. My friends can drive me places. Short box. (All i ever really move is my bike)

A few red flags on the truck. Just little things the owner said to creep me out. Thoughts on a Chevy Conversion van. G20 with the 350.

They are ugly
They are 'slow'
They are lumbering

I can think of a lot, but if you really find a good deal, and it does what you need it to, I dont suppose they would be to bad.

Heh, mentioning those, my shop teacher had one of those he drove to school, so as a joke at the end of last year we went to wallmart and everyone pitched in to get some of those $20 plastic 'spinner' rims and duct tapped them on there... he drove around with them for like 3 weeks... it was great. I wish I had some pictures.

Well my true goal is to make it rhough the winter for under a grand in a car/truck/hovercraft/whatever.
I'd LIKE...
-to have something that isnt totally underpowered
-To be able to cart my MTN bike around
-To not hve to deal with rust
-Drivable in winter. (Anything not RWD and TOO powerful)

I've found a 94 conversion van with 140K on a 350 for under a grand. REAL wood cup holders. (Not plastic that looks like wood, but OAK or something.) Very nice condition. Never seen a Maine winter. No rust. Can haul TONs of stuff. Good tires. Good body. Good engine. Carpetted.

Plus my mom has been dying to go to our family's campin Canada for 2 year now. It's a long ride (17 hoursor so), and frankly she can't afford gas. With the right seats from a junkyard this would fit my family and GF and allow her to save the money to do some much needed repairs.

I don't care about slow. (I have my camaro)
I dont care about lumbering (I have my camaro)
I dont care about ugly.... well ill just leave that alone
