I need advice on SUV thats safe (wont roll over), or cheap, or both.
I can always convince them to just let me build a rollcage in it, so I'm leaning towards it being cheap.

When I think cheap, SUV doesn't come to mind. lol
But if you want one that's safe in terms of someone hitting you going 60... Yukon all the way. Those things are tanks and of the last SUVs actually made of metal (not all plastic like Ford) haha.

But since ur talking about rollcages and tipping over, it almost sounds like you want a truck.....

dunno why you bag on ford all day but for at least 10 years they have been the leaders of safety (if you forget the whole firestone/explorer fiasco)

not that I care, im no ford fanboy but my dad does work there, so i have to defend it to a degree

what kind of SUV there is a wide range from Suzuki X-90 to the excursion so......what size you lookin for?

blazer is an SUV made by chevy so the statement blazer or chevy is redundant

You can get older blazers for pretty cheap, explorers arent bad either I had a 94 and it rusted to shit but the next body style lasts a lot longer.

If you want the Chevy thing, Blazer or GMC Jimmy, they are the same thing

All cars are safe if you know how to drive them, my explorer was THE rollover SUV and I only got close once and I was dicking around and slid around a wet turn and caught some traction and got some two wheel action. good times

I keep trying to tell my parents and my moms friend that, but obviously 16 year olds are physically incapable of driving sane, they obviously all love to drive at 500 mph and never break. So they keep saying "You're gonna get a slow, piece of shit that when you wreck/break it, it will be cheap to fix."

Until recently, they had horrible quality. I don't really care about safety test ratings much. It's about real world situations that I've been in or hear about. My mother was in a suburban when she was rear-ended on the freeway when someone hit her doing 50-60mph (she was stopped). The Suburban wasn't even close to totaled while the Ford (nice coincidence, huh, lol) that hit her was thrashed. So that's my opinion on safety. My opinion on quality comes from my friend's 96 Exlporer that fell to peices. So I have good reason to bash Ford. It's also easy to bash 'em BECAUSE they're on top.... haven't you watched a car comerical lately? They all bash Ford for that reason, lol. Nothing personal.

I had a cheap Camry for over 3 yrs as my first car... never spent a dime on repairs. Bought myself a Bimmer.... got in an accident 3 months after I got it (no speed involved btw). So that logic just doesn't work, lol.

Pardon my asking but what exactly are you going to use your SUV for? Have you considered insurance for a 16 year old? Maintenence? Not to mention the horrendous cost of gas? Sorry, I just don't see the need for a 16 year old to have a nice new or almost new SUV (or a nice new car for that matter).

Fair enough I'll give it to you. Its the only bad ford my family has ever had, which as my dad has worked for ford for nearly 15 years you can guess we've had a lot of fords in and out of our driveway

correct me if I'm wrong but the "safest" SUV as tested is the Subaru Forrester

why not get a Forrester XT, an extra $1500 or so for a Turboback exhaust and computer reflash and you'll be putting down some serious power

AND be the "safest" SUV on the road

For my money though, I love the late 90's Jeep Cherokee (it's what I owned before my WRX) or pretty much any Jeep Wrangler. The older Toyota 4Runners and Land Cruiser aren't bad either. If you're looking for something new I LOVE the new Toyota FJ Cruiser...

If money was no object I'd probably opt for either a Merc G55 or a Hummer H3, they both just look damn cool.

How long did it last? Cuz my parents had a Cherokee (a '96 I think) and it had so many problems it's rediculous. Power steering blew out, tranny gave out, AC gave out, one of the power windows gave out.... it was just bad, lol. But I second the 4Runner choice. My grandparents were 4Runner fanatics for the past 10 or so years until they recently bought a Magnum (they live in the mountains and need the 4wheel drive). But before they had a 4Runner they owned a Cherokee and it lasted them for a long time, so I dunno, lol.

My Cherokee was a '98 4.0ltr with an Auto tranny I did a few small suspension modifications to it, I had it for 4 years and it never once gave me any problems... Though I should note that the 98 was an odd-ball year. The changed a whole lot of stuff that year, then in 99 they reverted back to what they were doing in 96 and 97... it's kind of odd.

My father has owned several Grand Cherokee's however and has had all kinds of problems with them, the last one he had gave him all kinds of problems with the brakes, the power steering crapped out and interior parts just randomly came loose. The new one he just bought (with the Hemi) less then 3 months old... one morning just wouldn't start, just made a horrible scraping sound (nothing I nor he had ever heard before we're both pretty familiar with car noises, my father used to be a mechanic

). He ended up having to get it towed to the dealership for repair.... oh yeah and this is after he drove it home the day he bought it and it felt like the wheels weren't balanced properly. He brought it straight back and they checked, said it was fine... it kept getting worse, and he kept bring it back, and they kept checking and saying it was fine. He eventually took it to an independent shop and they found that two of the rims were bent and the tires were out of round from driving on them for days ... the dealership replaced the tires but refused to replace the rims

so on second thought maybe I DON'T recommend a jeep... at least not from my local dealership
