Is This Guy Trying To Screw Me Over?
« on: May 06, 2006, 07:04:00 AM »

So basically I've been searching for a supra on some car websites, and I recenetly came across a suprisingly cheap twin turbo. This is where the warnings come in:
1. I look at the picture, and one of the pictures looks semi familiar(like i had seen it on a supra website or something), but every feature on the car looks the same in each picture (i.e. rims, paint, etc)
2. The only contact info the seller provides is an email

so i decide to email him anyway and see what he says
QUOTE
hello i am inquiring about an ad i saw on cars.com for your 1993
supra. if it is still for sale could you give me some basic
information such as VIN number, previous owners, mileage, body
condition, and any problems the car has? thanks

notice my request for a VIN

he replys
QUOTE
Hello there,

My name is (removed), I email you regarding the 1993 Toyota Supra  that I have it for sale. The car is in perfect condition as it is shown in the ad and has no mechanical problems. All services has been made at a Toyota Service. The car has 89 000 miles on it, the title is clear,so,there is no damage on it.  .I'm the 3nd owner of this vehicle i bought the car from Texas

I also sent you few pics of the car as attach files, please open them. The car has a manual transmission. It's a 6 speed manual Twin Turbo  . The car has power locks, power windows, power mirrors, a real spoiler, a brand new custom cd/ am/fm/ radio that flips down.  ( i also have the radio that comes with the car if you prefer that). The car has been garage kept and the paint shows it.
I also have a freshly bored block 87mm, NEW greddy rods, NEW greddy pistons, and a crank with less then 5k miles on it polished and ready to go, that I will offer to the buyer first to purchase if they buy the car.
I want to let you know that I have few buyers who are very interested in buying the car, so in case you want to buy it asap, please emai me back ASAP.

so this is all fine and dandy but notice his lack of a VIN number

so i email him back again

QUOTE
Hello (removed)

Thank you for your quick response

So far the car sounds great and i am very interested in it, however,
before I can make any offers or even begin to think about buying the
car I need the car's VIN number. It can be found under or on the
windshield, under the drivers door, in the engine compartment(usually
on the quaterpanels or printed on a sticker on the radiator), and
sometimes in the trunk. Having the VIN number will allow me to check
previous owners, manufacture date, vehicle specifications, and
crash/theft history. Thank you for your time.

I obviously want a VIN number, and tell him where he can find it

QUOTE
I wrote some additional info about the deal because I received a lot of offers for this car and I want to select my buyer.

The car is located in San Martin, California but don't worry I will pay shipping to your house. I have  to tell you that I recently moved to Birmingham, United Kingdom due to work and family. I lost my job and now the bank knocks at my door to pay the rate for the house I bought so I really need to sell the car fast to solve this issue.

The price is $5,500. As this is a large purchase I suggest using a third party to complete this purchase. For safety reasons I think that the most important thing, when we make a deal over the Internet, is both of us to have 100% protection in case of fraud or anything else.

I had the car listed on a couple of websites and I want to finalize the deal through a third party escrow agent that will provide 100% protection for buyer and seller.
We will use Ebay's Secure Payment Center to handle the funds. They will also offer you a 5 days inspection period with money back guarantee. I have a $20,000 insurance policy with them so We will be both refunded in case of something happens. As soon as the payment will be made I will take a plane to US and take care of the rest of the things ( shipping of the car along with the title ).

This is how the deal works:

1.The Seller will open the transaction --> 2.The buyer has to make the payment to Ebay's Payment Center and they will deposit the money into their secure escrow account --> 3. The seller will ship the item to the buyer and he has 5 days to inspect it -->4.The buyer will contact Ebay and will notify them if he is satisfied or not --> 5.Ebay will release the money to the seller(in case the buyer is satisfied) or will refund the buyer(in case he is not satisfied).

If you agree with my terms please send me your full name and address so I can open a case with Ebay. Remember that time is an issue for me and I received many emails regarding the car, so please contact me ONLY if you are interested

I will wait your reply.

PS : Don't forget to send me your full name and address.

Um did i not just ask for a VIN? im not willing to even look at the car without getting a VIN first

heres the part that really makes me feel like im being scammed

Too good to be true, usually is. (That car's WAY to cheap even if it were beat)
Add to that no VIN and a sob story and I say it's a scam.

UPDATE

ok so i emailed him back for the last time again asking for the VIN
QUOTE
Mr. (removed) Sorry, but as I stated before I need a VIN number before I can even
begin to think about buying the car. If you are unable to supply me
with a VIN I am unable to buy it. Otherwise you will have to take up
some one else on your offer. Thank you for your time.

and he responded

its definitly a scam. i am 100% sure. i was just talking to my sister about it and when she baught her car she talked to many ppl through email from autotrader. she must have gotten 5 or 6 emails saying that they recently moved to a different country and the car will need to be shipped. they also said that they would need a couple thousand in western union to know that she is serious in buying the car. do what you wanna do man but im warning you that i am 99.999999% sure its a scam.

i would never give any private seller any amount of money without recieving the car first, and i would never pay without using a service like paypal where you can pay paypal, get the car shipped, check out the car, and then if your satisfied, you say its ok for paypal to give the money to the seller.

QUOTE

that would prob put me back a couple hundred since I live in Illinois and the car is supposedly in California

edit: i just asked him for some pics, so hopefully those should help me decide if its a scam. maybe i should ask to see something next to the car, or him in it, or from a couple specific angles, things that couldnt be found online or photoshoped so i know he actually has a supra

If you cant afford to go see it, then you obviouly dont have enough money to buy it. It's a car that's at half what it's worth. If you can't afford to go see it, then you can't afford to own one.

Its not as much that I dont have enough money to go see it, its just Id rather not spend money going to see it until im sure I am ready to buy it.

That is of course the other reason I am afraid of being scammed. I am aware of the price used supras usually run at.

My best guess is its been in a bad accident (possibly frame damage), which is why I wanted the VIN. If I become serious about buying it, I will of course check its accident history.

Anyways the guy sent me some pics

The only thing that I dont like is the paintjob is completely different in the last photo of the engine compartment which means one of two things

either A
this guy is a dick and hes trying to screw me over
or B
Its a pic from a body shop after an accident, and the gray color is primer

either way im starting to slowly move away from this buy, especially since I found another one with a body kit in IL for 6,600

I checked the VIN on that one, and I can understand why its so cheap, apparently something in the car had caught fire after an accident........lol. I guess this is one I would definately have to check out in person

Ok the car is missing a hood scoop in the middle pictures, but the radiator or intercooler, whichever that is in the front of the car, looks identical. I honestly dont know what to think, but I think getting a car from Ca is a little unrealistic for me. I think Im gonna turn the guy down.

The hood is missing the scoup in the middle picture. Seems too good to be true. I would go with the one in IL you stated was avaliable. Also where in Illinois are you, Im from the rockford area.

No friggin' way in hell.  Even if he was desperate to get rid of the thing he could've put a $10K sticker on that and had it sold within a week.  A 1993 TT Supra with only 89K?  Even if the car had been totaled and rebuilt it would still be worth a couple of thousand more.  I agree that the story and the whole 3rd party BS, just doesn't add up.  Although you could just run the vin through carfax for the hell of it and see what it turns up.

check out the very front of the car (where the toyota emblem is), not the windshield.

anyways I kinda like the one in IL but the whole fire thing is really making me look else where. what kind of damage can fire do to a car? (besides burnt interior and shit) I mean is it hot enough to melt or distort the frame?
