doesn't really matter as long as the gears go in smoothly. I always do it because in an emergency its nice to be able to manouver without being in neutral or blowing your engine, plus its fun smile.gif

Well I wouldnt shift from 5th to 1st as the gearing would drive the engine into redline easily. Possibly blow it. And as far as just kicking the clutch in and waiting until the car has slowed enough to warrant 1st, thats cool. But, bare in mind slowing the car down with brakes only obviously will take a greater toll on the brakes.

gear breaking and actual breaking will wear down parts no matter what, but i good combination of the two is what i always do. Though some cars (my explorer) wont let you shift down if at a certain speed/rpm itll give you a nice buzzing vibration to tell you no

I miss manual trannys. Especially loved my 96 Dodge Avenger.

Though it wasn't a good habit, I always used to stick it in neutral & just use my brakes. Once I came to a complete stop, I'd shift into 1st & wait for the green light.

don't ride the clutch - put it in neutral. The clutch has a spring, ridding the clutch wears it out faster.

Down shifting helps alot when in slippery conditions.

Downshifting is better, for the reasons mentioned above.

From my personal experience, the better drivers downshift, and the newer drivers use neutral.

I'm a good driver, but sometimes bad habits are just hard to break.  smile.gif

Poor avenger... sitting in a trucking yard collecting dust now. I'm still the last registered owner, but can't do anything about getting it back.  sad.gif

Remember folks... don't strike deals with family (or in-laws). You'll end up like me... lost my car, they still owe me $2,000 and had to downgrade from my nice Avenger to a 92 Eagle Talon.  blink.gif

Are you saying that instead of using only the brakes to slow you down, you should cruise while in gear and let the engine slow you down as well?

Exactly.

if im going around 40 mph (4th) i will down shift to 3rd then start breaking then clutch and drop into 2nd (clutch still in) you just have to get the feel for the car
i dont have a rpm dial in my car so i have to go by the sound of the engine (sometimes i dont clutch cause im that good)

they do that because its pretty much the only way to effectively stop a million pounds

also, an unrelated fact, if you use the horn in a truck too much you wont have any air brakes smile.gif

Exactly.  I had a buddy in high school that I used to hate to drive with, he would accelerate really fast and then when coming to a turn he would drop it into 2nd and let out the clutch, thereby giving you a terrific jolt.  I got annoyed with this and asked him why he did it.  He told me it was so it would save on brake replacement and seem to respond matter of factly about it as if he knew all of the tricks about cars.  I asked him if he had considered the potential wear and tear on the clutch, transmission, ect. by doing that.  He didn't have much of a response to that.
