I don't care if people will laugh at me for saying this.

Buy yourself a Saturn.

I reccommend and SC1 or an SC2.  They're pretty sexy, and the SC2 is pretty quick for a tiny 4 cyl, the SC1 is a bit slower, but better on gas.  They come manual or automatic, and you can definetly find a newer one for $3000 with probably 50-70k miles if you look hard enough.

Ford Probe GT can be had in decent condition for under that mark.
Mazda MX6 LS
Foxbody Mustang (Gas mileage may be an issue)
Miata.
The best thing to do is probably build a list of acceptable cars and shop til you find a good deal on one. Or eliminate some after test drives.

A z28 would be good.... I actually love that car. My dad has one that he has modded the shit out of... so if I ever need help working on it that would be cool.

What year would be best though do you reckon? The newer bodies or like an early 80's/late 80's body?
The newer ones are harder to find for fairly cheap it seems... like I found this one http://autotrader.co...3000&cardist=60
but 140k seems like ALOT of miles for a camaro... maybe I am wrong?

Thanks for the help so far!

EDIT: And trust me, I love the foxbody mustangs. Keepin my eyes open for one.

My 95K with a brand new motor and some mods cost me under 4K. If you look around a bit you can find some bargains. It's worth waiting a few months to find something truly nice.

kinda funny, around here they go for more than a 95-97ish stang

its those NW indiana kids, they are obsessed with the hatchbacks, and th ehigh demand shot the rpice through the roof, lol

ive always been partial to police auctiosn fro cheap quick cars, cant beat an interceptor crown vic for 500 bucks, sure youll get a 98 with 140k miles, but its well maintained

but as withy the foxbody mustangs, prices may vary by region

Go to cop auctions and do what vadar says and get a Crown Vic or Grand Marquis. They're not fast though.....for speed you want the 94-96 Caprice (with LT1) or Impala SS  biggrin.gif

whether they are fast really depend sont eh police department, alot of the ones around here actually have the 32v 4.6, those are fast as hell, but the normal beat cruisers just have the 16v, they can be fast with a little work though

I personally can't stand Ford. Crown Vic and Grand Marquis always have bad seals. If you get hti from behind your car will most likely blow up because the smart guys @ ford put the gas tank in a crush zone. And vader, are you talking about the marauder? That car looks real clean, but even road tests proven the caprice  over it. This is the police car I'm talking about- Has the 1st Gen Vette engine (LT1)

I'd have to agree. Sounds like an excellent college student car. Small, economical

some the police cars here have the marauder/markviii engine, but in the crown vic, not sure of other areas, maybe the suburbanites didnt want to go nuts and get the camaro pursuit cars, lol

personally im a ford man, so id take even a slower crown vic over a caprice anyway, lol, but thats based on alot more preferences than just speed and power

BTW, the marauder engine is the same as the mustang cobra, but with an automatic transmission, kinda the same principle as the LT1 caprice

One thing I can say though is that I LOVE the mustang 5.0. I think they're called "foxbodies", and I love the thunderbird smile.gif. I've been trying to persuade my friend into buying the v8 thunderbird and supercharging it.
