Hi cyd0g

Sorry but I just got around to really looking this over.

I know that the (TI) MAX232N is designed to be compatible with the Maxim MAX232 interface and the TI IC allows the grounding of V+ (Pin 2) but the recommendation of the Maxim IC is to use pin 2 as a doubler. Being that the TI chip is to be interchangeable with the Maxim, would you see a possible strain on data transfer or just a reduction of speed?

I also know that the recommendation for the capacitor is 1uF with only the Maxim MAX232A seeking a 0.1 uF cap, would you foresee any issues with that?

The reason I ask is that currently I am using the PC3000 with the Fairchild MM74HC14N board with the 6 pin Seagate adapter designed for use with the PC3000 ISA or PCI boards and I'm thinking about creating a SMT board based off your supplied illustrations but with a few modifications.

When i come to the part that i have to plug the power cable in the hdd, i get all the info about the hdd and rom version but i'm not able to get a command promt with t>. I tried alt+z, shift+z, altctrl+z and ctrl+z (cause i wasnt shure what strg mean in english  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) ) and nothing get me to the t> prompt.

I first tried it in Win98 first (cause you say in the tut to get win98/nt/me, so i assumed that this probably don't work in xp) and after in WinXP both with no result. Is it supposed to work in XP too?

Does anyone know what i'm doing wrong?

@code runner

sorry code runner, i´m not an electronics engineer .

found the the schematic on the net and just build it.

it works, but don´t ask me how  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

@fr_dr

strg + Z = ctrl + Z oder ctrl + Y (english/german keybord Y & Z is replaced)

yes, it works with windows XP

first press ctrl and then Z or Y

regards

Does anybody have the codes for different model seagate drives like the ST3160021A as my 160 gig drive is locked and my board is stuffed.

nobody will tell you the paramters.

because the parameters are the secrets

of recovery companies, they make money

with that knowledge.

Thanks for this info I'm gonna try coding a pic 12c508 to do this simple comms without hyperterm and I needed this info. Maybe I'll bang this out today.

That sounds good, let us know how it goes. Also couldn't you use a P89LPC932 (Can be bumped up to the 5V range) to make it flashable so if other parameters are found or reviled then the package can be altered for a different drive?

Amazing work cyd0g!  I've got one of these drives here that I'm going to try and unlock with your method as soon as my exams are done smile.gif

Mods, can we get a sticky for this? Or maybe a link from the "essential guides" thread?

I wasnt able to unlock it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Like i said previously, i can get to the point that i see all the info about the hdd in HyperTerminal, but i'm not able to get the t> prompt. Each time i press ctrl+y or +z, it return an ascii character, each time different, it's pretty weird (actually i get same result with any key). Do u think i need to check my solder, or can i assumed that my device is ok because it can upload  hdd current ver and firmware?

PS i added a led and a 150ohm resistor between 5v and grnd so i can know theres power, can it alter the data in any way and be the cause of my problems?

i think there is someting wrong with  TxD (Tx)  on your adapter,

try to type in "."  (just press the full stop  key on your keyboard

without the brackets )

you should see somthing like this.

Pgm=50 Trk=00009C(00009C).0.160 Zn=1 Err=00 ErCt=0000 Hlth=0000 CHlth=0000 Ready

if you don´t get a status message like this, you can´t send data to the harddisk.

check TxD  and try again.

 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

btw, Rx seems to work because you get "ROM verison message"

I have been designing a SMT board and cable set for this, after I get the prototypes in I will post a pick.

Now I would love to track down some more paramters to make the board worth while...

Be carefull ! You can KILL your harddisk.

I allready killed 3 ACE drives during development of the tutorial.

Would like to some photos @ coderunner  rolleyes.gif
