I'll be getting one of the following within a month or so.  I'm just narrowing it down now.

Honda Accord LX (4cyl)
Honda Civic LX
Mazda3 sport GT
Mazda3 GT
Toyota Camry (dont remember which. just the one with equivalent trims as the accord LX)
Toyota Corolla LE

Dont have a big budget.  Ive test driven the two hondas and the two mazdas today.  Will go try the toyotas tmr.  
Im not too sure about the Accord and Camry; they're a few grand more than the compact cars and i dunno if its realy worth it.  The accord i liked. Very smooth ride, handles nicely.  Civic im not too big a fan of though.  the mazdas were far more fun to drive.

things i do consider important are fuel economy, durability and value.  I like the mazda, but toyota and honda have a reputation.  And my family has had an 87 accord and 86 corolla, both are just fine.  accord has 175000km on it, and the corolla has 230000km on it.

and of course i'll save more gas with a corolla.

power and performance isnt really an issue.  I only want something to drive to/from work and school all the time.

can anyone offer some insight? Is the condition of the mazda going to be an issue say, 20years down the road?  maintenance costs? never had experience with mazda. i dunno.

As for matinence: any car requires regular matinence, oil changes, air filters, fuel filters (if the car has them), spark plugs, tune ups. Do these regularly and when the manufacturer says you should, and your car will last MUCH longer.

For example: dont put off changing your oil a few thousand miles because you 'dont have time', it wont hurt it once or twice, but if you do it continuously, it can start to harm the engine. Same with other parts.

Toyotas are a great choice but i have heard Mazda is really one its way up with its newer cars.

Infact: I belive the Mazda3 won Motor Trends comparision of cars in that catagory.

Scion, although new, its pretty much a Toyota taken from the Japanese market.

The tC doesnt look half bad too. Its the xA and xB that look like crap.

well now im down to 3 choices after taking all of the above for a spin.

mazda3 sport GT
Toyota Corolla LE
Toyota Matrix XR

now im debating whether or not i need the hatchback.  If i dont, it makes the choice really easy, and i save some money.
If i do, then its down to brand... the matrix and mazda cost pretty much the same, with the same trim level.  The only real significant difference is that the mazda has a 2.3L 160hp engine with 5-speed auto while the matrix has a 1.8L 123hp 4-speed auto.
I do want to save on gas.  but the fuel consumption is 9.4L/100km vs. 8.3L/100km, so not really a big difference.

hmmm...

Here is a question for ya, do you plan on running a big sound system in your car?  If so then the hatchback wins hands down.

I'm not big into hatchbacks, but Matrixes are nice. Toyota is an excellent company, with very realiable cars. I'm not a huge fan of the Corolla, seems like no matter what type you get, it's a soccer mom's car that wants to "live on the wild side" but can't afford a bmw. Between the two hatchbacks, I think you have two solid choices.
Are you going new or used? What kind of warrenties can you get on each car?
