What Is A Very Cheap, Very Fuel Efficient Car.
« on: August 18, 2005, 12:19:00 PM »

Ok Im used to driving civic's, mitsubishi mirage's, and thats about it. I just bought about a week or two ago, a Pontiac Sunfire for 1700, it has 17 inch knockoff rims, they look nice tho. Their white 10 spokes curbed all to hell. It has some super riceified wing altho it doesnt look bad at all, it isnt needed therefore its rice. Its fiberglass and not the big ole aluminum style. It really looks exactly like a stock supra wing. Its molded to the trunk so Im stuck with it. When I test drove the car I was told it gets really good gas mileage.... yea right. It gets 26-29 mpg at most... thats nothing compared to the 30 Im used to.

I want to either trade straight up or buy a Very cheap gas saving car. Ive been researching Volkswagen TDI technology and I think I might try to trade my car for a 98+ beatle TDI 5 speed. The sunfire is a 5 speed, nothing wrong with the body it looks really good. It does have a CEL on but its just the egr flow valve and it will be replaced soon from my mechanic. Does the egr flow valve have any effect on the gas mileage im getting?

Am I over reacting? Is that really not a good mpg rating? I just hate that so far I put 10 dollars in the tank every night this week and I have just gone to and from church every night this week and I went and got my hair cut today and yesterday I went to the post office, and the day before I put in applications and went to an interview and I put 10 in it last night and Im setting on half a tank. I dont use the AC because the compressor has a leak and wont hold a charge, plus I dont use AC anyway. I shift at 2.5k-3.5k depending on what Im doing, if Im going up hill I will be in 2nd and wont shift till I hit 3.5k but if Im just coasting on the highway doing 55 Ill be in 5th at 2k rpm.

Idk this has just blown my mind at how much Im spendig for gas at the moment, and the outrageous gas prices arent helping any.

Also are there any Mercedes, Volkswagen, and if BMW make any cars with Turbo Diesel engines, along time ago I remember a formula online for making your own fuel and I want to do that, because Im cheap and I like to save my money and plus it would just be awesome to say I make my own fuel. Can you do that with these engines and will it affect the life of the engine?

also, name some BMW's if any that have deisel engines.

Lol long post but thanks guys.

uhm.. do you really expect to trade your sunfire straight up for a 98+ tdi beetle?

 huh.gif

as to your questions.. why bother? 26-29 is still pretty damn good.. if you don't think it's good enough, sell it and buy a 92-95 civic.. decent body shape and great gas mileage. try and find an hx and you should be set

edit: and yes.. a bad egr can effect mileage

I can attest to this, my truck (big blue '86 Sierra) got horrible gas mileage (granted, its a truck, but still) until we gutted the engine bay and rebuilt the engine. Still isnt to good (its a truck, what can you ask of it?) but its better than it was.

Yes, I do plan on trading for the tdi. The deal is there I just dont know if I want it or not. The sunfire is red with a ricer wing and 17 inch rims, the beattle is purple and has vynals galore and 15 inch knock off rims. I just want something better on gas than this. Im used to much more bang for the buck.

A cai doesnt give you better gas mileage, I dont think. But I could be wrong. All it does is cram more air into the engine and I would guess that it would have to give it more fuel to keep the A/F ratio right which would use more fuel.

As for pics, buy me a camera and Ill take all the pics in the world for you. My dad's camera is the only one that I have access too for pictures fo good quality. I have my camera phone, but I have no data cable to transport the pics to my computer. Ill have pics when I get around to visiting my dad. I might go up there today who knows.

As for whats wrong with driving a civic. Nothing at all, but if I was to get a civic I would want a 95-98 civic dx which I almost bought one but my mom and I walked out after setting there for 20 mins while the saleman was on the phone talking to some guy about a car instead of finallizing a car for me. Id love to have a civic, but I want the most gas efficient one there is. I thought about trying to find either a del sol or a CRX. Ive heard of some CRX's getting 45 mpg! that would be great.

Me a ricer? Ok say what you want, but I call it buying smart. If I would have bought that riced out civic, which I admitted it was riced out thats one clue Im not a ricer, a ricer will never admit what he has done to a car is rice he will call it a performance mod. I could have sold all the A/V stuff in the car and gotten alot if not all of my money back that I paid for the car. My sunfire has a wing that looks good, its molded to the trunk or I would take it off. It has an axel back muffler but it sounds great, its not one of those rice cannons that most honda guys have this one sounds really low and really good. The tailights are gay, but they do make my car stand out and I have to have tailights so they stay. And the rims, you can say rims are rice, but in all reality rims are style. And I like the rims so fooey on you. The interior is painted and when I get a chance it will be painted back to black or at least back to a color that wont be so noticable. Like I said, Im no ricer, Ill be the first to admit my car has some uncle ben's here and there, but I bought the car like that, I didnt waste my money on adding to the ricification process.

Look my friend, I know rice, and rice is you. embrace it smile.gif. I drive the most hilariously riced out Geo ever (I even spraypainted my rims chrome for effect biggrin.gif:D) and I love it more then any other car ive drove. I live in a car family so ive driven some pretty sweet cars too

just admit it your a ricer, theres nothing wrong with it, you like your car, so who else cares? And I know from experience that a tricked out car is gonna get more chicks then any old muscle car (Chicks dont care about how fast a car is, they just wanna drive a sweet looking car)

No, I myself am no ricer. Ive never added any useless mods to any of my cars. I bought my car riced midly. You on the other hand... you painted your rims crome? Im guessing you have stock steelies? Crome paint looked horrible on an xbox, Im sure it cant be too pretty on your rims.

As for girls, yes they like looks. But I have an undying need for speed.

These cars are amazing little brutes with a few mods.  As for fuel efficiency and cheap.  If you could sacrifice the speed then an early 90s Ford Festiva can be had for quite cheap and in great condition ($2-$3K).  There is nothing to the car so they are very light on maintenence and very easy on gas (about 40MPG in town and about 45MPG on the highway).  It certainly won't give you the speed you are looking for but given the cost it might be worth it to have as a daily driver and then get a second car as a cool looking sports machine.  You really aren't going to find a quick car that gets over 30MPG.  I'd hardly call a TDI beetle a peepy sports car.  The other thing to consider is that parts for the new bug are going to be spendy.  They are pretty decent for reliability but when something goes wrong you are going to pay through the nose for it.

If youre looking at the beetle also look at the golf, it's what they based the beetle on and I think they look better.
