my first car was a z28 camero, got it real cheap but it was real shitty

Yeah like alikaz said the 90's protégé is a good first car, I had the dohc motor manual, and they are powerfull(for 4 cylinders). But theres was alot of problems(Changed the head, intake, gaskets, And air was still coming in from somewhere, and the doors had problems locking/un opening etc.., the body was all rusted) with it so we scraped it.
And parts are expensive.

Well its not a manual, but i suggest looking at a Subaru SVX. Not at all common and they are great cars, the interior is top notch. Plus its really fast, AWD and about 240hp stock. Best part is you can get them cheap cause no one knows about them.

Other than that maybe a Mustang, or maybe 90-92 Supra.

EDIT: Please do not get a civic!!

I will say get a civic for your first car.  They can take abuse and need littly maintanence.

Its a great car to learn on, infact, I am 25 and still have one.  Civic Si 1999 with 80,000 miles.  No problems, great gas millage.

You can get late 90's for just about what you are looking to spend.  Insurance is cheap.  Great car too.

i would suggest taking like 200-300 dollars and buy an 80's dodge colt, and drive it around for a few weeks. sence its your first car you need something to tear up first and its realy hard to kill those cars.

then i would go get that civic. ther perfect for teenagers that dont have alot of ecperiance and need to save on gas.
make sure it has ABS. they will save your life.

A 1991 VW Jetta Turbo Diesel (around 60HP)......cheap car (around 1000-2000cnd loaded) very good on gas about 700-800kms per full tank...5 speed and small car and very good turnin radius and parts are SUPER cheap here...

Im 17 and  own a 1987 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe 5 Speed Manual 190HP....its very fun car but a pain in  the ass for parts...

have fun findin one.....If i were you i would go for Jetta becasue they are very good on gas

I bought a '98 Integra when I was 17 for $7000 CDN. It had a 5spd and 1.8. They are good cars as long as you dont put body kits on them. I am completely against body kits.

You can probably get a '93 or '94 Integra for close to $3000 or $4000 now.

buy something you like, so you'll take care of it. nothing worse than a mistreated car.

my parents wanted to buy me a honda for my first car, i didn't like any of them, i knew i'd destroy one if they got it for me. it all depends what you want, A to B? get something newer and problem free. something somewhat fast you can play with, get a good older solid car that's easy to work on

Hard to kill them?  BS.  An 80s Dodge Colt is nothing more than a re-badged Mitsubishi Mirage Hatchback.  Mitsubishi Motors are well known for burning oil after only a few years of use.  Mine was an '88 and it went through more oil than it did gas.  I finally ended up seizing the engine in the damn thing because I couldn't keep up with all the oil I had to dump in.  I kid you not, this sucker was starved if you didn't give it 3 quarts of oil per week.  I replaced the engine in it and it started leaking burning oil after only a year or two.  Hardly what I would consider a durable car.  IMHO an early 80s Civic hatchback would be the way to go for something like that.  They can still be had for well under $1,000 and I would actually say that they are better built cars than the late model civics.  Very low maintenence (since they don't have many parts to begin with) and very durable.

Every Mitsu I've ever been exposed to has been a certifiable nightmare. Engine issues. Electrical issues. Tranny issues on the DSMs.

ok, i'm not going to argue the colt issue any more. just speaking from personal experiance and not from a story told by someone else who had an experance.
