Breaking A Cd Player Under Warranty
« on: June 27, 2005, 02:08:00 PM »

Ok, have a Kenwood excelon cd player in my car that I bought from Circuit City, bought the 2 year warranty plan to go along with it.  In september, that warranty ends. How can I break the cd player, beyond fixing it, without causing visible damage? At least not from the outside. Maybe reversing positives and negative power cables after the harness?

You could try one of those cheap "lens cleaners" with the stiff brushes that scratch the fuck out of your lens.

Proably water. Are you sure you want to do this though? If your player works fine, then why? You might even need to pay a dedutible of like $50 or something.

if it works fine i wouldn't bother.. but if you really want to kill it, then here's what you do. (believe me, this will fry the ever loving shit out of it)

materials:
bucket of water
crappy old lamp cord
power strip with switch (no circuit breaker in it, just a switch)
long stick
soon-to-be-dead stereo

to do:
1. make sure power strip is off
2. strip ends of lamp cord about 1"
3. strip deck yellow/red/black wires about 1"
4. twist together yellow and red wires from deck and tie to one wire from lamp cord
5. tie black wire from deck to the other lamp cord wire
6. place deck into bucket
7. plug other end of lamp cord into power strip (make sure that bitch is off!!)
8. stand back and hit switch on power switch with the long stick

clean up procedure:
1. use stick to turn power strip back off (most likely won't have power anyways cuz this little trick should have tripped the circuit breaker in the house)
2. unplug lamp cord and pull deck out of water
3. go inside and reset circuit breaker
4. put everything away where it belongs and place deck out in sun for a few hours to dry out

once it's dried up, take it to circuit shitty and say "it just stopped working all of a sudden" and look puzzled  uhh.gif

not only are you giving a 12v dc stereo 110v ac, but you're also sending that 110v thru-out the entire stereo by placing it in the water.. guaranteed to work

don't ask how i came up with this   ph34r.gif

(let's just say that this has been tested before.. HAHA)

So I can get a new one (for free). I blew my sub in my car, brought it in, no questions asked, they handed me a new sub.

I had a friend like this kid once. He was spoiled and always got warranties so he could fuck the item up and get a brand new one for free later on even though the one he had was fine. He got over it because the last two times he had items replaced, his original item was much better. I guess what goes around comes around. Anyways I replied in this thread so I'll tell you a fool-proof way to do it and much easier and safer than that other fucktards bucket-o-water trick. First of all you don't want to do anything that can hurt you or burn your house down. (If your circuit breaker doesn't trip you can bet your ass your house will catch on fire.) Tie the speaker leads together that come from the back of your head unit(Pick a channel and twist it's positive and negative wires together). Hook it up and crank the music. Smell the smell of transistors given a dead short and burning their little hearts out. I would recommend only doing one or two channels to make it believeable. Then crimp butt connectors on the end so it doesn't look like the fault of the installation. This should pretty much render whatever channels you hook up useless and you'll get it replaced.

burning out a channel or two doesn't guarantee replacement.. more often than not that is easily (and cheaply) repaired.

haha, well way to act like you were kidding about that even though you really weren't. Don't try to blame your dumbass idea on me just because I called you on it and pointed out how dumb it was. It's tough to detect underlying sarcasm through text on a message board. Way to try to blame it on me for you neglecting to observe that fact. Nobody threw a pissy fit at all, (except for maybe you with your reply) I simply stated how dumb it was.

Ok, let's end some debates here RIGHT now. Before this gets out of hand.

1. Dropping anything that's powered into a bucket of water is fucking stupid. Especially if you're talking your OWN house. I don't really care who wired the house. It's just stupid. It's dangerous. Don't do it.

2. Shorting the speakers would be a MUCH easier and safer way to kill a head unit. I still think it's pathetic. If you don't like your stereo buy a new one and in the future don't buy things you're gonna be sick of in a few months.

3. Trailers are VERY poorly wired as are several old houses. It is very scary.
