Looking To Replace My Car Within The Next Few. . .
« Reply #15 on: April 21, 2005, 06:39:00 PM »

All the numbers I was looking at were in the 3450 plus range and that was for the normal coupe, not 2 +2.

My bud had a N/A 300Z and a TT version. The TT had MUCH better suspension. Even adjustable to a variety of levels of stiffness. Im not sure if it's a direct swap on these parts or not. But I know the difference was more then noticable.

The alure of Mustangs and Camaros are the same reason some people don't like them. They're common. Which means aftermarket parts, whether it be brakes, engine upgrades, or suspension will all be more plentiful and mostly cheaper.

A normal Z28 weighs around 3300 lbs and with the LT1 engine will push 275 hp and 325 ft/lbs. And there are plenty of "factory freaks" that have 15-30 added to both of those numbers. Mine was dynoed, (By the previous owner), with 289hp at the rear wheels. This is without some much needed tuning. He guessed probably 310ish at the wheels, which would be 350 ish at the crank. I need to get it to an actual dyno soon to test this. And I can promise you ill get more bang for my buck out ofmods to the z28 then you would to a N/A 300 ZX. But the ZX is a nice looking car, and certainly is something that I would happily drive. Test drive some cars before you make a decision. You may find out you really like something you didn't expect. Or that you hate something you thought you'd really enjoy.

OH, someone on Cardomain.com is selling his impulse (similar to the RS) project for $1300.  The guy is in my area, which is a big +.  How easy would it be for me to get it setup like the RS (ie turbo engine and AWD transmission)?  He already has the RS hood, ect.  Also are the parts rediculously expensive?  Sorry about all of the questions but this car seems like it would be an excellent candidate for high HP and low weight.

Well if I were gonna go DSM, (Which I never would do to the reliability), Id go out of my way to find a Galant VR4, so I have the sleeper look and the usefulness of a 4 door car.

wink.gif  @yaz, I was looking at the Talon/Eclipse but due to the unpredictability of the engines, I have decided against getting one.

IVe never really looked into it, but I would imagine there are plenty of suspension upgrades for Stangs and camaros, especially the newer ones, as people tend to "Rice" them

And I never knew the eagles were unreliable, Ive only been in one though, and it is damn quick

The Eagle Talon is nothing more than a Mitsubishi Eclipse with a different name.  I have also been in one and it was fast as hell but I do know first-hand Mitsubishi's history.  Anyways, I think I finally found the answer.  I asked this same question on another forum and someone proposed the '92-'95 Toyota MR2 Turbo.  I did some checking and it puts out about 200HP and only weighs 2850.  It gets 20MPG in the city and 27MPG in the highway.  So the gas mileage and the power to weight ratio are both pretty good.  Not to mention the car handles incredibly well and they engines are very durable.  The only two drawbacks that I see to getting one are:

They aren't the easiest car in the world to find in my area
Parts will probably be pretty expensive.

blink.gif   The other thing he said is that the engines are really solid and he knows several people who have had them for years and years and had nothing but standard maintenence on them.  I really think that this car is what I have been looking for.  Good HP, decent gas mileage and relatively low weight.  It is only a couple hundred pounds heavier than my current RX-7.

cool.gif  Beyond that T Tops rule. The braking sucks. I don't know if it's this particular Z28, or if they all are just ungood braking cars.

Meh, my mechanic said it wasn't that big of a deal to do the MR2 (we are talking about the '91-'95 MR2 here, not 1990 or earlier).  Anyways,  as for the 1995-1999 Eagle Talon/Mitsubishi Eclipse, even though they aren't true DSMs they are still unreliable, right?  I was able to find some Mitsubishi VR4s within 300 miles at a decent price.  I will have to verify the insurance though.  As for the Camero Z28?  The gas mileage isn't quite what I want.  I plan on sticking with the turbo MR2 at this point.  Light, Fast, Reliable, Relatively fuel efficient.

Theres plenty of companies that make tubro kits for them depending on which year you end up with. I know Greddy makes kits for several engine options. And there's S/C kits as well. All fairly "cheap". I just know they're reasonably reliable. Handle great. And have easy power options thatll get you to 200-300 hp, which is plenty in a car that light.

ok, i've been off forum for a few months, but i'll chime in

mr2: i'm guessing you're looking at a later body style which i haven't heard good things about them

300zx: good luck finding one, when i was in the market for a sports car, they either had way too many miles and were in my price range, or they were garaged with very few miles and way out of my price range. i never even test drove one because those two factors lost my interest quickly

3000gt: good luck finding one of those too. ^same reason sweet car though

i bought a 94 z28: good miles on the clock, almost new condition, enough power to do stupid stuff in, pretty nimble(although could use stiffer springs, i'm gonna get coilovers). the brakes do stop well, but could use bigger disc, i've over heated them quite a few times. and milage: driving like an idiot in stop and go traffic i would get 17mpg's. and driving 90+ on the highway i got almost 30mpg's. (although any  6 spd should do the same)

not trying to sway you one way or another, just wanted to chime in. i'm currently going through an older european car stage, the only problem with factory turbo's is a weak drivetrain :-P . oh yeah, i hate dsm's

oh yeah, miata's are monstors, i used to think they were girlie cars, but go to an autoX, my jaw dropped

Anyone got any links for the parts on the miata?  I would really like to put a nice turbo on the sucker.
