All right, I need some help to figuar out why my Jeep won't start.

Its a 93 Grand with a 4.0L. The other day it ran fine, no problems at all. Came home for the night, went out the next moring and it wouldn't start.

Its got a new fuel pump, fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, roter, alternator, and barttery. Its getting fuel and spark but just refuses to start.

Fuel presser comes back at 50PSI. No check engine light. I'm at a total loss with this thing.

The only thing I havnt done is pump all the fuel out and replaced it with new fuel. Maybe just really bad gas?

Also the mortor has 208k miles on it. But its been babyed every since it was new. Oil and filer being replaced every 3k miles and every thing else that needed to be done on time when it should have.

Any insight or ideas would really help.

My guess was fuel pump. But since you say you are sure it is getting fire and fuel....

hmm.....

If it was ME, I would first pull the ECM fuse for a bit and allow the computer to reset, then try again. IF no dice, then pull a plug or two, and check for fouling.

Its just hard for me to understand why an engine with a new rotor and cap, plugs, and fuel pump will not start. I assume that a Jeep of this model year is equipped with either TPI or MPI fuel injection. BUT it is unlikely that ALL the injectors would fail at once...lol.

It is possible that you have water in your gas, but that would most likely cause a sputtering, and then stalling effect. In most situations, it would at least hit.

Just make sure your fuel pump is alright, that was my first guess anyways.

I'm drinking moonshine, but hit me up when I'm sober, and I am pretty slick around anything that runs on gasoline or diesel....even the infamous rotaries!! I've been doing it for a while, because in my part of the country, we are too poor to pay mechanics!!

I pulled all the fuses and checked each one, all good. Have not pulled relays yet.

I know the fuel pump works fine, fuel presser is at 50PSI just like it should be. And I know the injecters are all working, when I pull the plugs, they are wet with fuel.

Tomorrow I'm going to dig out my timing light to see if maybe some thing happend inside I can't see from the outside. Rechecked the fireing order and its all good. I know the coil is fireing b/c I got one hell of a shock off it.

I think I ruled out the bad gas guess. Went down and got some starting fluid. Won't even start on that. So my next guess is, the timing is way wacked, but don't see how that could happen by sitting in my driveway. Or its the CPS (Crank Position Sensor).

Yeah, if it wouldn't even hit on starting fluid, there is a problem in the ignition SOMEWHERE. The firing order in an engine will never change; make sure you have the correct wires routed from the distributor to the plugs. Does that model even have a distributor? If so, DOUBLE CHECK the coil wire (the one in the middle of the distributor) for tightness, both at the coil and at the distributor. If all else fails, take your timing light and check it out...if it is out of time, then that could be the problem--but thats one hell of a timing problem.

Since you said you pulled "all of the injectors", your ignition is probably equipped with a coilpack instead of a distributor. A faulty coilpack could definitely be the culprit. The shop manual for your Jeep should explain how to test for defects.

Ya my Jeep dose have a distributor, I think even the new ones do. I didn't even get a chance to play with it today. Boss sent me to Phoenix today to pick up some new vending machines.

I know all the wires are tight and are making good contact with the cap. Tomorrow I think I will get a new CPS, and see if that dose it. I hope thats what it is. Only thing is its a BITCH to get to.

Yeah, no kidding! I had to put a crank sensor on my monte carlo, and it WAS a bitch. About the distributor thing, I'm not sure if the newer Jeeps have them or not, since digital MPI requires a coilpack. But thats beside the point.

Good luck man, I hope you get it running. I know how it is to have a broken down heap in the driveway.

I got the new CPS, havnt put it in yet. Don't feel like crawing under it in the snow. I want to get the thing running, but theres no shortage of other cars I can drive around here. I just miss my Jeep, want to go play in the mud. Plus I need it to move some trailers around.

I got a jeep same model but a year older and it ended up being a duff fuel pump, So I'm at a loss to what your problem could be if your getting good fuel pressure.

Im sorry to hear bout Your Jeep lol Jeeps only car I can picture drivin, last long my fathers old cherokee was like 20 years old. I got A Cherokee Myself 98 cherokee classic but couple probs my right doors automatic lock dont always work and I need a new fan belt, easy fixes but 2 poor and lazy really lol, I got a wrangler for the summer but the salt kills the mirrors covering but O well I <3 Jeeps

my guess would of also been the fueal pump

but check into the timing chain belt, if the belt is dead, it will crank and crank and will not start, if it has one anyway, my dad had the timing chain belt fall apart on an old caravan and it cranked and cranked but wouldnt start for shit, i hope its not the timing belt, my dad and his buddy had to drop the engine to replace it

It was probably the fuel pump or something you already fixed then during thr process the engine flooded with gas. Try getting all the gas out then try to start it.

Funny how people find posts long after you thought they were dead.

I guess I should have reported back on what the problem was. It ended up being the CPS. The one on top of the bell housing. A royal pain in the ass to get to. Since it was a 4wd model, I had to take the front drive shaft off to get to it. Was still a tight fit, but it runs.

I dont drive this Jeep to often any more. I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee now. The ZJ is kinda more for wheeling now.

Now, back to my search for install ideas for the XBox in a Jeep WJ.
