Engine Cooling Fan Does Not Work
« on: September 23, 2004, 07:45:00 AM »

I have a 96 chevy cavilear thats a 2.2.  Had a problem with my car overheating which later found out i had a faulty water pump and saw that my cooling fan was not working. Took it to a good friend who is a good hardware mechanic and repair my water pump and everything little thing that was wrong with my car but could not fix my cooling fan. He put in a new relay switch and a new coolant sensor but the fan still does not cut on automatically while my car has been running for quite some time.  My friend check the motor on the fan and said its in good condition and even splice a wire from the motor to the fuse and the fan starts working. so he made me a switch so i can turn it on and off whenever i drive but it can be a bit inconvience at times cause i either forget to turn it on or off , but just wondering if anybody had the same problem or know what cld be causing the fan not to work on its own. sad.gif

Man, that sucks if you have to turn it on everytime you drive. Good Luck  smile.gif

I really don't know much about it.

Its only a few things it could be. I say its the sensor or wiring. The fan works. All the wiring can be tested with a continuity tester or multimeter. I'd really put money on the sensor or a wire near it being shot.

Yeah we both came to that conculsion and bought another coolant sesor and still it did not turn on by itself even when we left it running and the turn on the heat. The temp gauge would sit right in the middle. the funny thing about this story just happen yesterday actually.  Like i said we put a new relay switch and sensor and the fan still didnt work. double check the fuse and the fuse did not look bad i mean I know how to tell if a fuse is blown but the fuse looked fine to us. Even the motor looked fine to my friend so thats why he decided to just hook me up a switch to turn it on and off. Well driving one night i was smelling burnt plastic and when i got home and hit the switch to turn off the fan the switch was all hot and some what melted so the fan wouldnt switch off unless i pop the hood and unplugg the wire. but by doing that i accidently dropped the old fuse in a cubby hole/nook next to the battery which i could not get unless i take out the battery.

Im mechanically challenge and dont have much tools unless i dig for them and i wasnt in the mood to deal with it so i went to autozone and bought a sturdy switch and a new 30a fuse. Fought for a bit to get the new switch to work which it did and didnt it was a pain in the ass that i gave up and just said fuck it and figured its gotta be a wiring problem. go to Autozone ask some questions which no help. Go home and decided to just put the new fuse in and lo and behold while the heater was going the fan turn on blink.gif  My heat was going full blast and it was just turning. took the new fuse out and it stop working.  Just dont understand cause the old fuse didnt show any damage but it didnt work buy a new fuse and it s back to normal. so i guess that answered my questions. Thanks guys anyway for your replies

You could set it up to a remote turn on lead so it only runs with the key turned similar to an automotive amp. smile.gif
