Getting Random Frag, Soft Modded Xbox
« on: November 17, 2005, 09:58:00 AM »

Also, the Xbox has not been opened since 4 months ago when my friend installed new fonts and fixes so MS Dash wouldn't crash. During the move I was very careful with it, didn't smash it against anything.

Your friend softmodded your box with an Xecuter 2.6? Well gee that's just innovative. I've never heard of anyone doing that.

Having had issues with the infamous FRAG myself (first Xbox blew my TSOP somehow.. even without adding a modchip or anything), my new box has had some issues. Mostly, this is just due to my modchip being finicky, a little piece of dust getting in here, something budging it slightly out of place, etc. my remedy is to unplug it, listen to make sure that everything shuts down (drives, gpu fan, sys fan, etc.), around 2 to 3 minutes, then i plug it back in and it works fine.

however i'm still confused. you say your friend softmodded it, but with a modchip? and then he installed font hacks? if you have a modchip, you don't need any of the font hacks or anything. you can run your very own bios. see some of the tutorials on the site for info on that.

in short, you're just gonna have to try it one thing at a time. you know, pull out the hard drive and boot up with just the dvd drive and see if it'll boot to the typical error screen (08), and then just keep going through until you find something that when you pulll it out, it works fine, and plug it back in, it doesn't work. however, fragging usually means that something is wrong with your tsop chip. so if you have a modchip, just reflash it. if not, get a modchip.

So he put a chip in, installed font hacks, then pulled the chip out? Seems like a waste of time and warranty when you could have just as easily used the UEX hack under MechAssualt or 007 or Splinter Cell, and achieved the same results. That could be part of your problem right there. If you hadn't opened it up though, then you might still be able to get a warranty return on it.

If you softmod it with gamesaves...... simply ftp to the box, back up all the files you used before, then delete anything that shows you modded it at all. but of course, it's too late to do that now.

if you keep getting a frag error, but not all the time, i'm thinking that one of your components could be going bad. i've heard some people say that their boxes just go bad over time. i've had a v.1.0 xbox that was manufactured in late october 2001, but haven't had any problems with it ever, other than things that i've done to it myself.

so it seems like your best best is going to be trying out your friend's chip to see if it works with that, then getting a chip of your own and installing it. that should hopefully fix the fragging error.

safest bet would be to wait until the chip. then get one of your own if needed. that will override your onboard bios with its own. if that doesn't fix it, then idk.

@ raceboy404

we weren't actually talking about if he could return it or not. i was saying that the method that he chose to softmod the xbox wasn't the smartest.

depending on the retailer, he could have softmodded the box, then when it started screwing up, ftped to the box, deleted all the files that were on there (after backing up of course) then take it back to the store that he bought it at. they would, of course, examine it, determine that it hadn't been opened, and that it was indeed having problems, and they would give him a new xbox, and send the other one off to MS for refurbishment or trash.

wow
i actually totally forgot that you had a softmodded xbox for a few seconds there. i was like dash? fonts? wtf? but yeah. that's a very very good probability. if you can change out the dashboard, and change the fonts, there's a very good chance that you could fix the frag error. not too sure if that'll work, but it's definitely worth a shot.

FIXED IT.

Sorta, now I just get Error 21 XD

Regardless, it was the dashboard or something. I replaced it with a very old backup and now it boots up like it used to. Thanks all for your help, I'll keep you updated.

Update:

Xbox started doing it again, when my friend came over every time he put the mod chip on it booted absolutely perfectly. Right now he's doing a brand new softmod in hopes itl work, but he said that if it's the bios it shouldn't be booting at all.

When he takes the chip out, it boots fine for a good 2 hours before acting up again.

It's definitely not the hard drive, we took it out and it should have booted with an error, instead I got FRAG with no picture as usual. DVD ROM did the same, my friend even tried his HD and DVD ROM in my Xbox with same results, it's gotta be a Motherboard issue.

Like I said, when the mod chip was resting on it it was like nothing was ever wrong, it booted flawlessly every time. After the chip came out it boots fine on its own for a few times before Fragging again.
