Ive heard a few people say Escapes are remarkably underpowered. Were it me I wouldn't consider an Escape in the same categroy as the Xterra. Id much rather own the Nissan.

Isn't Nissan partnered with Ford? Hence pretty much the same vehicle? I could be wrong but I know it was in the past.

I'd go with a Hybrid Escape, good power, good gas mileage, and tax breaks.

Nissan's partnered with Infinity and have had very high reliabilty ratings.

Ford owns Mazda, Jag, and some others.

Honestly at this point, I think you need to sit down and decide what she is going to use the vehicle for.  I am amazed at the number of women who feel they need to own SUVs to have as status symbols.  If she just wants something with lots of cargo/passenger capacity then she will do just as well with a mini-van or Subaru Outback.  Gas prices aren't going to be going down any time in the near future, so just make sure she is buying an SUV for what it is intended for and not just so she can keep up with the Jonses.  Anyways, if it turns out that an SUV is suited for her then the Xterra would get my vote.  When considering an SUV or any type of off-road vehicle, IMHO there is no such thing as too much power.  If you go off-road you are definitely going to need it.  That and Nissan's in general last longer.

And I'm sure, a Nissan salesman wouldn't be biased.  rolleyes.gif

That said, I wouldn't consider an Escape.

As much as it pains me to support the french, I'm going to suggest the XTerra, it's a great SUV..especially the supercharged model.  If you're not going to spring for the 6 cylinder engine, though, go with the Escape.
